Chapter Twenty-Nine –

Hang Up Your Swords

Part One

Lukas tried to restrain a clearly distraught Kaine, whose sister now lay unconscious and bleeding in a sick room bed. Nobody knew how to heal the injuries. Yes, of course, they had tried all the spells and Lukas's potions they could think of, but nothing had worked. Kaine tried to wrestle his way out of the warlocks iron grasp, but even a demon hunter wasn't strong enough to do that. "Let me in there! She needs me!" He screamed as loud as his lungs would allow. But the door was locked, as was Lukas's grip on the young man's shoulders.

Samia tried her best to soothe him, shushing him like a tired baby, and gently rubbed his arm. "It'll all be okay, Kaine. I promise." Letitia and Victoria were in there, along with Madame Greta, who had come along especially with some potions to try. They had managed to get Tria's heart beating, but for only a minute or two before she flat lined. The same potion had not worked a second time around.

"Who's got the job of telling Kaine?" Letitia asked between sobs.

"It's best it comes from one of you two, dearie. You know them better." Madame Greta said, taking off her hat and looking down at the floor, a show of respect for the loss of such an incredible and brave young life.

Letitia sat down at the desk in her office, Jovah's old office. Kaine sat shaking in the rickety wooden chair opposite her, his face reddened and wet from crying. "I'm so sorry Kaine. Honestly, We tried all we could but unfort-"

"Well you obviously didn't try hard enough! My sister is dead! She was all I had left in this world! My parents are dead, I do not know of any other family. You just stood by and watched Tria die and all you can say is sorry?! What the fuck?!"

Letitia would normally verbally scold someone for swearing at her, but in this instance she knew he had every right to be upset and angry, although his anger was clearly being directed at the wrong people. Yes, Kaine's parents had also fallen victim to these horrible creatures, and now his sister. The only family he had was now gone.

She sighed. "Kaine, I know and completely understand you're upset and hurting," she moved around the desk to stand beside him, "but there was literally nothing we could do. I know you are not really angry at me, but I'm the only person here you can take it out on. And that's fine." She put her hands firmly on his shoulders and looked him deep in the eyes. "But believe me when I say I tried. And I am here for you. We did manage to get her heart beating with one of Madame Greta's potions, but after just ninety seconds it stopped again..."

"Why didn't you try more?!"

"We did, we used all of it, and nothing worked. I am so deeply and terribly sorry. Our lives will not be the same without her, I know. Yours more than ours. But we all loved her. And if it is any consolation at all, we all see you as our family. You do have a family, Kaine." Letitia pulled him into a hug and discreetly wiped her eyes.

Part Two

(Two weeks later...)

A gentle knock on the door told him that Skarlet had arrived for their movie and junk food date. Jayden opened his door and did his best mock impression of a supermodel, with his hand on his hip and the other caressing his own neck. "Well hello, gorgeous." Skarlet giggled. "You been munching the sugary snacks without me?"

He quickly snapped out of his stance. "No." He quickly said, as he closed the door. He turned to see that Skarlet was holding up an empty packet of gummy bears. "Okay, maybe." He smirked. "Fear not though, my love, for there is plenty to go around."
