Chapter Thirteen

Aftermath And Mourning.

Part One

When the sky lightened up and was no longer full of black shadowy figures looking to cause death and destruction, Jovah looked around. Luckily, it seemed everyone was all right. Limus was trying to scare them. The demons he had sent to the Hall were luckily some of the less dangerous. All demons were dangerous, but the ones he had sent were easy to kill. Which was a fantastic stroke of luck. They'd only been training for a day.

Ava and Toby were helping each other off the ground. Cody was running around helping the younger demon hunters to their feet, checking them for injuries. Apparently, the worst injury was a large bump and gash across Cameron's forehead. That was until a scream sounded from the centre of the courtyard.

Jovah dashed forward until he found the source of the scream. Kirstie was kneeling down on the ground, her head in her hands. In front of her lay a shaking, and bleeding Damon.

She composed herself as much as possible, saying "Come on, Damon. You can fight this." he knew she was lying to him. A long fang from a demons mouth had broken off and was sticking out of Damon's neck. There was no way he was going to survive.

Almost like she was forgetting everyone was there, she leaned down and put her hand on his cheek. Kissing his lips lightly, with tears falling onto his face, she said. "I'm sorry. I tried to save you."

"Listen - Kirstie..." Damon struggled to speak. "I - I need to tell you...that I... I regret never telling you how I feel... I got too hung up on Ska..." He spluttered and coughed, a little blood escaping his mouth and trickling down his cheek and jaw, forming a little puddle next to him. "...Skarlet," he finished. "I had a dream about you...A-a few nights ago."

"Damon, just stop talking, it's okay."

"I love you, Kirstie." His eyes rolled back, but he fought the urge to slip away. "I always have... Please...Don't forget me."

"I won't. I promise." She saw him trying to smile. "I promise, Damon. I will never forget you."

Later that night, the sky had changed colour again. This time it glowed orange and red from the large fire in the bottom of the gardens, the less beautiful part, where they burned bodies of demons that had managed to slip into the Hall's grounds. The smell was terrible, like rotten flesh mixed with out of date milk and eggs, and when the demons were thrown onto the fire, there was a hissing and crackling followed by a high-pitched tone, which Kaine wasn't sure was just in his ears or not.

Kirstie wasn't there. She had decided to stay inside, in the small living room, on the overstuffed red sofa where her and Damon had first met. They would bury his body in the Hall's cemetery the next day. There was a light knock on the door.

Kirstie looked up to see one of the younger girls, Lorelei, standing in the doorway. It appeared that she had not gone to see the demons burned either. She was in clean clothes and looked like she was fresh from the shower. "I think they're almost done out there." She said quietly.

"Why Damon?" Kirstie said.

"Why anyone?" Lorelei replied.

"Why did this have to happen? Why to us?!"

"Because, from what I've heard in these halls, Jovah broke Letitia out. And this was obviously Limus's revenge." Lorelei stepped further into the room. "I got you coffee."

"Thank you." Kirstie said as Lorelei placed the steaming mug on the small coffee table.

"Come sit with me." She offered.
