Chapter Eight
The Faces Of The Angels
Part One
The day had gone quickly. And plans had changed once again. They would be heading to the City of Corodin tomorrow instead. Which suited them all well; the training had completely drained them. But at three o'clock in the morning, Jayden couldn't sleep.
He remembered his encounter with Skarlet the previous night and remembered them arguing as he passed Damon's room to come to his own. Damon had overheard them talking, and he couldn't help but feel a little guilty. He hadn't exactly said anything bad about Damon, but he obviously liked Skarlet, and what she had said had clearly gotten to him.
He decided it was too late to try and make amends, Damon would most likely be sleeping. But Zavier wasn't. He sat by the window in his room, which overlooked the gardens. The small white lights outlining the perimeter of the archways and the paths lit up little patches of bright green grass, and the faces of the statues. Flowers wobbled on their stems as the wind blew. To the left of the window, he could see the entrance of the Hall.
The lobby lights were on, but only for a few seconds until it was plunged into darkness. He wondered who could be up at this time of night, thought it was strange even, that someone would be near the entryway, like they were coming or going. But who? And where to? He'd had a strange dream earlier in the night, and as a result, was now unable to sleep.
When the sun came up, and pierced through the small gap in the curtains, Kirstie winced as she tried to cover her eyes. She turned away from the brightness only to see a pair of legs standing by her bed. She looked up and there stood Kaine. She let out a little shriek and covered herself over with the covers, even though she was wearing pyjamas. "What the heck are you doing in here?"
"Came to wake you. Katia insists we have a 'hearty' breakfast and then start training as soon as possible."
"Why did you not knock? You do knock in your own Hall, right?"
"I did. Three times. You didn't answer but stirred when I stood here. Now we're having this conversation." Kaine said, his voice neutral, and his face showed neither the fact that he was happy nor unhappy. Just a plain, blank look.
"You're strange." She smiled sarcastically. "Now get out so I can get changed."
Kaine left the room without another word. "Absolute nutjob." He heard Kirstie mutter to herself after he left.
"I heard that." He said.
"Well, hear this," Kirstie started, and opened her bedroom door. She popped her head around the frame and stared, telling him to go away, but in a much harsher way. With the additional 'F' word. "Got that?"
He saluted, "Got it ma'am. I'll be on my way now." He smirked as he walked further down the hallway, hearing Kirstie's door slam.
"Is she on her way yet?"
"Chill out! I woke her. She's getting dressed now. Although she is not happy with me." Kaine chuckled as he answered Samia's question.
"What did you do?"
"She didn't answer when I knocked. The first, second or third time. So I walked in, stood by her bed and waited until she woke up and gave her a mini cardiac arrest." Kaine said simply, shrugging.
"Well, I'll wait here to have breakfast with her, then meet you guys in the training hall." Zavier said.
The others left to meet Katia and Jovah in the Training hall, as far as they knew, Victoria would be joining them too. There was another gym over the courtyard where they had been told a younger group of Demon hunters were training. They weren't as experienced, though, and so probably would not be coming with them to find Letitia just in case a fight broke out. They were ages thirteen to sixteen, and were still children, so had to stay at the Hall. Anyone over the age of sixteen could go out if they were with a trainer, or if they were in a group. It was only when a Demon hunter turned eighteen could they go out alone. But it wasn't advised. Demons could be anywhere and everywhere.
