THE ORPHANAGE
Eva doesn't remember anything before the age of seven. Some people thought that was strange, but it had always been that way for her. It was normal. She doesn't remember her parents, her family, or friends. All she has ever known was life in this school. Some would call it a boarding school. She referred to it as The Orphanage.
With it's high stone walls, Gothic appearance and the way the voice echoes through the halls, it had a creepy feel to it. It was described as being Victorian, old, or ancient. The classrooms had been revamped to look as modern as possible. But the housing buildings had been kept
In a school of over one thousand pupils, every one of them was different. But they all had one very special similarity. They were powerful, but they didn't know it. As she got older, she started to realise that the other pupils also didn't remember their parents. Which isn't uncommon in orphans, but this felt strange. At least to Eva Moritz.
It was almost as though her life had only started once she hit the age of seven, as a lot of other pupils had also described. They were being taught the normal kinds of lessons you get in school; mathematics, English, languages, IT, history and geography. But something always felt a little off to Eva and her friend Tommy. He had described it as "It's like they're all hiding something from us."
Little did they know that one day they'd find out what that 'something' was.
PART ONE:
Miss Bowen entered the classroom with her long grey hair trailing behind her. Tommy had often wondered how it never got caught in the door as it swung shut behind her. Next to him sat his best friend Eva who he had known since he started here at this school "The Orphanage." She also had long hair, except hers was a platinum blonde colour. Wavy, shiny and silky smooth. Whereas Tommy's was short, brown and spiky.
He played with his spikes while Miss Bowen organised her desk. Finally she cleared her throat and sat down. "Right," she started, "it's that time again. Who's ready for some Maths? Algebra, to be exact."
Eva let out a louder-than-anticipated groan.
"Not an algebra fan, Miss Moritz?" Lydia Bowen asked, raising her eyebrows and lowering her glasses.
"Nope. Not one bit." Eva said.
"I'll be honest, my dear. Neither am I. But luckily for you, I have something so much more important for you to study today." She looked down at her desk. "And Tommy and Ada... You will be joining her."
Tommy and Eva only had enough time to exchange a confused look before someone knocked on the classroom door. Their Headmaster entered and had a quiet talk with Miss Bowen, before standing in front of the class, with his hands clasped behind his back. "Tommy, Eva and Ada? Can you come with me please?"
Ten minutes later they were in a small room with three other pupils. Two of which they had never seen before. "Now, you're probably wondering why you're here. Well, I'll tell you, but first I need to check you all recently turned fifteen, in the last month?"
The students nodded. "What's our age got to do with this?" Asked a short, curvy girl with shoulder-length black hair.
"You are all now at the age where you can be exposed to the truth. The reason why you don't remember your lives before coming here to King James School. You may not like it, but here goes..."
He opened a drawer in his desk and pulled out several small glass jars full of a purple and gold powder. He noticed they all looked confused and one boy was slightly worried judging by the slight step backwards and stumble.
"This here is the reason you don't remember. Every few months we put this through the AC at night. You breathe it in, and it makes you forget..."
"You've been drugging us?" Ada snapped. Come to think of it, this was the first time Tommy had heard her speak. Her voice was lighter than he expected, almost angelic.
"Not exactly. You guys wondered recently why you've suddenly started running faster? Solving problems quicker? Been more alert to your surroundings? It's because this stuff stops having as much of an effect on you as you get older. Your powers are starting to come through. You'll soon remember what your lives were like, and why you were brought here. While you go through this change, we will be taking you out of lessons, and you will be housed on the South Wing, with the others like you."
"This is some kind of prank." Tommy laughed. "And here's me thinking a Headmaster couldn't possibly have a sense of humour."
Headmaster Charleston shrugged. "Fine. Don't believe me." He stood up from his chair and walked around the desk. "Just go to your dorm rooms, pack your things then meet me at the South Wing. You have fifteen minutes. Go."
Part Two.
"Hey, you don't believe any of that crap, do you?" Tommy caught up with the boy who stumbled backwards in the Headmasters office.
He had bright green eyes, blond hair and was at nearing six feet in height. He looked down at Tommy, who was only five feet five, and Eva who was even smaller. He glanced around himself.
"Can I let you in on a secret?" He waited for Tommy to nod. "I had, what I thought was a dream, now I'm thinking it may have been like a vision...Flashback, if you will. A woman, long black hair, handing me a Thomas The Tank Engine plate of toast and a cup of orange juice. As far as I can remember, I've never had breakfast anywhere other than here, and I've never even seen Thomas The Tank Engine."
"Could have been a dream. You might have been dreaming about having a real family?" Eva shrugged.
"Possibly. But I've spoken to my dorm roommate, and he swears that I was saying 'Thank you mummy' in my sleep, the night I had that dream... or vision or whatever."
"Are you seriously implying that you think old man Charleston is telling the truth?" Eva raised an eyebrow at him.
He shrugged. "I'm Cory, by the way."
"I'm Tommy and she's my best friend Eva, The other girl is one of our classmates Ada. But the other two I have no idea about."
"Well, we have fifteen minutes. Best get packing to head to the South Wing." Cory said, as he rushed off ahead to his dorm room, leaving Eva and Tommy behind to, once again, exchange a confused look.
