Chapter Eighteen
Letitia's Lies.
Part One.
Letitia was alone in a small office that had been allocated to her. She was putting away folders of paper, which detailed every students name, age, gender, family members and abilities, that lived in this Hall at the very moment. There was a knock at the door. She was not feeling in the mood for a conversation, so she chose to ignore it.
But then without warning, she was the third person to have a heart attack thanks to Kaine throwing open the door so viciously that it swung open one hundred and eighty degrees and slammed into the bright yellow wall behind it. A chunk of painted plaster fell to the floor. "Oops. Sorry." Kaine said as he closed the door carefully after his sister Tria had entered. Jayden and Zavier had hung back to make sure everyone else was busy. That way, their conversation with Letitia would not be interrupted.
It was eight pm, and the Hall was quiet. The training hall was closed and locked, all the lights off. The halls were eerily silent, the creaks from the floorboards were the only sound as they walked.
In Letitia's office, Kaine and Tria had told Letitia to sit down, like this was some kind of hostage situation. She obeyed and sat behind her desk, looking confused. "We all know that you and Katia know where the relics are... Which is why you were taken, so was your stepsister, and also why Katia was attacked and subsequently killed. Now tell me Letitia, where is it now?"
"You know I can't tell you that."
"You don't need to. We already know." Tria said. "So go on. The truth. Why does a sixteen-year-old boy have possession of one of our most precious Relics?"
"What?"
"Toby!"
"What about Toby?! Look, the Shield is safe in my old home in-"
"I never said it was the Shield..." Tria raised her eyebrow. "Letitia, you are one of us. You are our trainer... Why are you lying to us?"
"Tria... You do not want to get mixed up in this. Trust me. Now get out." Letitia rose from the seat behind the light-coloured wooden desk, and pointed toward the door, looking between Tria and her brother, Kaine.
"No." Kaine said defiantly. "Did you know Toby had it?"
"No! I didn't, all right?! I was trying to find out but now I know."
Tria looked at Kaine. As brother and sister, they knew what each other was thinking, just by looking at each other. Kaine knew Tria thought Letitia was being dishonest. Kaine stepped forward. "When did you realise the Shield was gone?"
"Just before Katia was attacked. They must have thought I'd given it to her, she was my best friend. But no, I handed it to Toby, the least suspecting of everyone."
"Why not just keep it safe? Why not do what the rest of us do and try to keep everyone safe? You do realise that if Limus finds out that Toby has the Shield, he will kill him to take it? You have put a sixteen-year old's life at risk. Well done, Leti. I'm starting to wonder why Skarlet looks up to you so much."
"That's not fair-!"
"Neither is you risking a child's life!" Tria shouted, just as the office door flew open. Jayden and Zavier were there. Their faces the description of thunder. They both sat down on the spare plastic chairs.
"You might be the senior, you might be our trainer, but there is no excuse for lying to us about the whereabouts of our Shield! Toby is just a child; he has no idea what he is doing! He doesn't even know what a scythe is! For crying out loud, Letitia, what were you thinking? Handing something so important, so precious, to a child?!"
