Chapter Seven
New Friendships And Unrequited Love.
Part One
"Did you find much at Letitia's sister's home?"
"Nothing other than some gooey, icky stuff on the banister and the place was an absolute shi-" Toby was cut off.
"Demon slime and the place was ransacked." Kaine interrupted. "Katia, how are we supposed to figure this out when no one knows who Letitia's real father is."
"Well, we don't know he's involved. The Council just thought he might know something." Katia shrugged.
"Like what?"
"Who took her. Where they took her. Why they took her. What it is she could possibly have or know that Limus wants." She sighed. "I just guess it's just covering all angles. Trying all possibilities. But that's enough for tonight. It's getting late, we should sleep and then start training tomorrow, then head out."
"Where to?" Toby asked.
"Corodin."
Back in the Hall in Ayda, Toby felt strange. Somehow out of place again, even though him and Kaine had gotten on so well. He sat alone in the room they had let him sleep in, slouched in a small armchair with one of the books Katia had given to him. After yawning for the fourth time in five minutes, he decided to change for bed. He had just pulled back the plain blue sheets when they're was a knock on his door.
He opened the door. "All right, dude?" Kaine said.
"Yeah, I was gonna head to bed, but I can spare you some time. Are you okay?"
"I'm shattered. Just fancied chilling. Movie?" Kaine held up a DVD and judging by the picture on the cover, it would be quite a gory, grisly film.
"Yeah, screw it. Just be warned, I may fall asleep." Toby laughed.
"That's all right, I'll just leave if you do."
Further down the hall, Jayden was standing outside a closed door, trying to decide whether he should knock or not. He decided not. And turned away. The room he was staying in was at the other end of the hallway, so he tried to hurry back before anyone found out he was there.
Too late.
A door behind him opened with a creak. "Jay?"
It was Skarlet.
"Hey." He asked after he'd turned around to see her standing in a black nightdress, her purple hair all bunched up in a messy bun. Her hazel eyes stared out sleepily, and inquisitively at Jayden.
"Were you just outside here?"
"Uh, yeah - I... I just wondered I-if you, maybe, fancied having a chat? Maybe a hot chocolate?" Jayden had never stammered before. He wasn't even sure why he'd gone to her room in the first place. But after training with each other all morning he'd realised how great she was. She had the speed of a jet plane and was as nimble as a cat. He'd stood in awe as she scaled those walls with a cat-like grace that made him sure she was, in a previous lifetime, a cat. Her fierceness and her dedication to family. The way she'd stormed off to go on alone to find Letitia, was a very attractive trait. It showed passion, he loved passion.
"Sure." She threw on a dressing gown and walked out into the hallway. She caught up with Jayden and they walked, for some reason, in an awkward silence downstairs to the kitchen. After making the hot chocolate, they went into a small living room to the side. There was an open fireplace, a gothic chandelier dangling beautifully overhead. In the middle of the room there was a two seated dark red sofa, looked overstuffed, but comfortable, nonetheless. Skarlet went ahead and sat down, followed, for some reason, gingerly and nervously by Jayden.
