Chapter Twenty-Six.
Battle.
Part One.
The hallway had fallen silent. Two dead bodies lay in front of him and as he turned to leave, he picked up the book from the floor, the book that he knew contained the Hunter's Shield.
The Ayda Hall had never been so quiet, so still, even in the night, there had always been some movement.
He couldn't believe how easy it had been, to come here where he knew they would be alone and kill them. Leaving him with the only one who knew where the shield was. Hopefully by now Limus was dead, and the Hunter's would return from Helroute after giving up finding the shield, then he could go there himself, and create his own army of fighters. Loyal warriors to rid the world of scum.
The book was heavier than he remembered, but then again, he had just taken a beating. His nose and lips were swollen, bleeding out and dripping onto his coat. His arm had been bent backwards during the scuffle, and he had fallen on it, causing the elbow joint to pop out of place. Luckily, he knew how to fix it quickly, painlessly, and make himself look as though nothing had ever happened.
He turned back to the two bodies on the cold floor. He knelt down beside the older one, pale with staring eyes, that looked straight through him to the ceiling.
"Sorry, son. But it had to be done." He placed his fingertips on the eyelids of the boy beneath him and gently pulled them down, closing the eyes gently.
Part Two.
"No! Stay here... Not yet... Come back!!" Jovah shouted after the group of demon hunters he had brought to Helroute. They were running down the bank towards the cemetery where they heard the scream coming from.
He stammered a few noises, then sighed, and ran, or more like jogged after them, huffing and panting as he tried to catch up. "Stop! Not yet-"
"Why are you trying to stop them?" An old man's voice asked from the darkness of the trees.
Jovah stopped dead and spun around. "Well, Lance Merriweather. What are you doing-"
"I have it." Lance said. "Let them go."
Down the bank, across the courtyard and into the cemetery seemed like forever away for Ava, and Jessika. They were the smallest and youngest of the Hunter's, so had not had much training. They were petrified.
"Stick with me." A voice said as a figure whizzed past them. "I'll look after you."
It was Kaine. The two girls nodded and followed him. It turned out he intended to wait outside the cemetery, on guard almost. Watching to make sure no one else was following. "Get down!" He shouted, as a basketball sized ball of fire and rock hurtled toward them.
The girls screamed, hid their faces, and ducked behind a nearby tree stump, the tree itself was lying on the ground.
They knew a demon had spotted them. But they had no idea how many of them were about to emerge from behind the building where the fire had distracted them.
In the cemetery, Cody had found Lars, standing rigid, his mouth still open in a silent scream. Tears edged his eyes and his bow and arrow way laying on the ground in front of him.
Cody then saw why Lars had screamed. About eight feet away stood Limus, and in front of him, on the ground was a body. The body of a young girl.
Her eyes stared out at them; blood trickled from the hole in her neck where Limus had plunged a two-foot-long blade.
