Chapter Eleven:
Cassie.
Part One
Cassandra stepped out of the bathroom of the motel she was staying at with her mother. The kidnapping hadn't seemed to go to plan because they had released her so suddenly, almost like they had got the wrong person. We have found what we're looking for, that strange man had said.
What did he mean by that? She had asked herself that question at least a hundred times today, and it was only half past one in the afternoon. She dried her hair with a towel, and dressed, comfortably, in jeans and a plain back T-shirt. She should call Mikey, her boyfriend. He would be worried about her.
She fished in her bag for her phone, and eventually she found it, buried at the bottom of the bag. She looked down at the screen and felt a pang of guilt as she saw all the missed calls and texts from her boyfriend. The last one was received ten minutes ago. 'Please, Cass. I need to know you're all right. I'm in the right mind to call the police.'
She text him back. 'I'm okay. I'll explain later. Dinner at The Cabin?' She asked, naming a small cafe around the corner from the motel, which wasn't far from Michael's house.
'Okay. What time?' Was Michael's reply.
'Let's say three. I only just got out of the shower.'
Her mother also was at the motel, eating some cheese on toast in the small kitchen. "Cassie?!" She yelled, even though the apartment was so small and walls so thin that Cassandra would have heard her mother if she had whispered.
"What is it?" She asked from the bedroom they had to share. A small motel room with one bedroom was all they could afford right now. Their house was trashed, so they could not return home yet.
"Sit down, I need to talk to you. About what happened at home."
Reluctantly, Cassandra sat down, wondering whether or not she actually wanted to hear this. She grabbed an apple from the small fruit bowl and began to eat while her mother spoke, seemingly forever.
"Okay, you're going to think I've gone crazy-"
"That ship has already sailed, mother."
"Just listen, and cut the sass, missy. I need you to listen and understand. What you saw that night, that thing that came through the window. Wasn't human, not a ghost. Love, I don't know if you've seen other things before that, but it was a Demon." Cassandra's eyes widened. She knew what she saw was completely out of the ordinary, not human, not a ghost. "I used to live in a world where it was like that every day. Demons could attack us at any time. That place was called Corodin. And when you were taken by that man, Limus? That's where he took you-"
"Why did he want Letitia?"
"I'm getting to that... When Letitia was born, I still lived in Corodin, still had a life and a husband there. But it turned out to be wrong, so wrong. I should never have got involved with him. He was a bad man. He was secretly set out to wipe out all Demon hunters and have his own army rule the Demon hunter world. I left, bringing Letitia with me. But it was too late to have her forget what she was. A demon hunter. She was six years old and was too old to start wiping her memory. But you, Cassie, you were still in my stomach at the time when I fled. I was three months pregnant with you and I didn't want you mixed up in all that stuff. Especially seeing as things were getting worse, more serious. And I'll admit, instead of staying and fighting with my people, I ran away. But I did it for you."
Her mother took a deep breath and sucked on a cigarette. As she blew the smoke out, her breath caught in her throat causing her to cough and splutter.
"Cassie. You have the same dad as Letitia, I'm not her real mother as you know, but I took her on when her mother died. In battle in Corodin. Which means Letitia gets her powers from him and her mother, and you- you will start getting those powers now. I've neglected what I vowed to do and that was to keep you safe, by erasing all that you knew, all that power that runs in your veins. I'm sorry I've been out with Marc; I haven't protected you. I failed, and you ended up getting attacked because I didn't use charms to protect the house. I put you in danger. I guess, what I'm saying is, I'm sorry. For never telling you the truth, your origin. But now it seems there's no hiding it." She took another drag of the cigarette. "There's someone in Corodin I want you to meet. His name is Hagan. He's expecting us tomorrow."
