Peridot zoomed past me. For a second, I was almost sure that my hair was going to come right off of my head.

"Does that always happen?" I asked.

"Yes," Yellow replied. "Besides their strength, the werewolves also have to practice their speed."

"Who's the fastest?" I asked.

"Peridot," Yellow answered. "She's really the most experienced of all of them."

"Because she's been a werewolf the longest," I said.

"Right," Yellow replied. "The others have been trying to catch up to her for a while now, but she's managed to stay ahead."

I watched Peridot slide past Agate and playfully punch Bismuth in the shoulder.

"You're lucky that the one that imprinted on you is Peridot," Yellow said.

"Why do you say that?" I asked.

"She's the strongest, she's the fastest, and apparently also the most loving," Yellow answered me.

"Well, I know she's skilled, but that wouldn't make her the best imprint," I said. "She just happened to be exactly what I need."

Peridot was looking at me from next to Smoky. She waved and smiled at me. I waved back. I could still see the pink line on her arm from where she had accidentally cut herself the day before. She said something to Smoky and then ran to my side.

"Hey," she said. "Giving her a second to try all of them out on her own."

I laid my head on Peridot's shoulder and watched Smoky try to get past all of the werewolves. She was getting past all of them, but her streak ended when Royal Blue took her down.

"Too bad," Peridot murmured. "Royal Blue really is quite the challenge."

"She's like a fairy," I said. "How is she such a challenge?"

"She may be small, but she's always aware," Peridot answered me. "I'd like to see you try to get past her."

"Oh no," I said. "I doubt I'd be able to get anywhere near her."

Peridot chuckled. "It would take a while for you, I guess," she responded.

"I wish I could do all the things you can do," I said.

"I know," Peridot replied. "You should consider yourself lucky for ending up with that nice shield of yours."

I smiled. "Yeah," I said.

Peridot tapped her foot on the sand impatiently. She was humming something very quietly, but it didn't sound like her usual tune to hum.

"To the right!" She shouted. "Jump to the right!" She then growled. "Your other right!"

There was a crash!, and both Peridot and I cringed.

"That's gonna leave a mark," Peridot said.

I looked at the tree that Smoky had bumped into. Then I saw something that was a bit out of focus. I changed my focus to that, and there they were. Two red eyes staring. I gasped.

Please don't let that be a vampire.

The eyes disappeared for a split second, further confirming they were eyes. They looked at me and sped away. I could just see the silhouette. I didn't want to say anything. If that were just a hallucination, I would be getting everyone worked up over nothing. Besides, no one wanted a second vampire battle. I suddenly lost my train of thought when my phone started ringing. I yanked it out of my back pocket and stuffed it next to my ear.
