I woke up the next morning. There was something missing, and I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was. As I mentally woke up, I realized there was a missing touch. A temperature. It was warmer than usual. Then it hit me. I looked down.
Lapis is gone.
My hands flew to my mouth, and tears threatened to pour out. I prayed that she hadn't left. I rushed downstairs as fast as I could. She was in the living room, standing, waiting for me.
"Lapis!" I cried.
I sped to her and threw my arms around her. My eyes widened. Something wasn't right. She was cold. Too cold. Her scent seemed off too. I pushed her away and stared at her.
"What's wrong?" She asked.
Her voice was the same, that's for sure.
"You're cold," I said.
"Aren't I always cold?" Lapis asked.
"Yeah," I replied. "But you're really cold. Too cold."
Lapis shrugged. "I mean, I wasn't snuggling with you this morning," she said.
"True," I responded.
Her reasoning was legitimate, but something in my gut told me not to completely trust her. I didn't know what was up, and I was hoping it was just me making a bit of a fuss over things.
"You look stressed," Lapis said.
"I'm just a little confused," I replied.
"Do you need a kiss?" Lapis asked.
I thought to myself. I sighed in submission.
"Sure," I said.
Lapis stood up on her tiptoes and kissed me. Again, I noticed something unusual. She wasn't kissing me the way I was used to her kissing me. It just didn't seem as natural as it normally did. I pulled away and stared at her. She seemed rather confused. I figured that I was being too paranoid and nothing unusual was happening.
"Can I get you two girls anything?" Mom asked from the kitchen.
"Sure," I answered. "Toast please."
"How about you, Lapis?" Mom asked.
"Oh, I'm okay," Lapis replied. "Thank you."
I blinked.
That's weird. Lapis always shares breakfast with me.
"Do you wanna sit on the couch together?" I asked.
"Okay," Lapis replied.
I sat on the couch, and Lapis sat next to me. She laid her head on my chest. I hated how cold she was. She was making my chest cold, and I didn't like that. I knew something was definitely off after I had that thought. I never hated anything Lapis did. I always loved everything she did. I loved it when she yawned, when she spoke, and even when she was just silently watching something. I hated how all of this Lapis's moves were so smooth. The Lapis I knew was a little clumsier. I loved every part of Lapis. I hated how this one wasn't like her.
I felt like I was being illogical. I was probably too tired.
"Lapis?" I said quietly.
She was asleep. I sighed. I was stressing myself out. I laid my hand on her head and silently watched the television.
"Peridot," Mom said. "You're not acting like your usual self."
I looked around the room, then at her. "She's not either," I replied.
