I was helping Peridot bring a plate of sticks, marshmallows, and chocolate outside. It was a warm night in June. Perfect weather for a nice summer outing. The sand felt so good on my bare feet. It was no longer cold.
I had turned seventeen the month before. I was finally matched with Peridot's age.
We placed the tray down on a log with a flat surface. Peridot picked up a marshmallow and inspected it.
"This one looks good for toasting," she said.
"They all look good," I replied.
Peridot pointed to a marshmallow that had lumps in it and wasn't exactly marshmallow shaped.
"Not that one," she said. "It's deformed."
"That one looks fine too," I responded, picking it up and putting it in my mouth.
"You're a dork," Peridot said. "But I can see why you'd be protective of your family."
"Are you calling me a marshmallow?" I asked.
"Yep," Peridot answered.
I grabbed her by her shirt collar and pulled her towards me, glaring. She simply grinned teasingly. I pulled her in a little harder and kissed her.
Dork.
Peridot pulled away, still grinning. "Taste like marshmallow too," she said.
I elbowed her in the gut, which, of course, affected me more than it affected her. She laughed and smiled that crooked smile of hers. I had gotten to see it a lot lately. Everything had been calm.
Peridot took my hand and led me to the bonfire Yellow had lit. We sat down on a log and warmed ourselves by the fire. Dad was watching us from the other side of the fire nervously. It was taking him a bit long to get used to the werewolves, especially after learning about these werewolves' association with vampires. Of course, not to mention that a vampire was sitting two seats away from him on the other side of Yellow. Liliac had come to join us. She felt that it was only right after she had helped us.
Peridot picked a stick up off of the ground and put her marshmallow on it. She then began to heat it over the fire. I watched it turn from sugary white to a golden brown. It looked quite delicious.
"You wanna have a turn?" Peridot asked.
"Okay," I responded.
Peridot handed me the stick and let me toast the marshmallow. I looked back at her and smiled. She smiled back and kissed my head. I looked back at the marshmallow, and it was on fire. Suddenly, I panicked.
"It's on fire!" I cried.
"Whoops!" Peridot exclaimed.
She took the stick from me and removed the marshmallow from the fire. She swiftly blew it out. It was brown with charred black spots.
"Isn't that a perfect marshmallow?" Peridot asked.
"I guess," I answered.
Peridot pulled the marshmallow off of the stick and stuffed it in my mouth. I tried to shove her, but that didn't work.
"Hey!" I shouted.
"You did that to me once," Peridot said, smiling.
"That was nearly a year ago!" I cried.
Peridot hugged me with one arm and kissed my head while I chewed on the gooey marshmallow. She was right. It was a good marshmallow.
"Like that, marshmallow-face?" Peridot asked.
