Chapter Twenty-Three.

RAKEEM SAT IN the uncomfortable metal chair. He had his arms crossed in irritation and his left leg jumped impatiently as he stared across at the two detectives - one was female and the other one male. "You look nervous," the male detective said.

"..." Rakeem didn't reply but he narrowed his eyes. A few more moments of silence passed as the female detective threw a manila folder on the table.

"So, Hakeem-" The male detective was cut off.

"Rakeem," Rakeem snapped in correction.

"Right, Rakeem. Or do your friends call you Keem?" The male detective asked.

"Yeah, my friends call me Keem," Rakeem said, stressing the word friends. "You call me Rakeem."

"I'm Detective Reinhart and this is my partner Detective Brown," Detective Reinhart said.

"I don't give a shit who you are," Rakeem hissed.

"Do you know why you're here?" Detective Brown asked. Rakeem shot his angry gaze at her.

"No. You fuckin' pigs dragged me out in the middle of me gettin' my dick sucked," Rakeem all but yelled.

"You have a disgusting mouth on you, huh? You kiss your mother with that mouth?" Detective Reinhart asked.

"Keep my ma outta yo mouth, cuz. The fuck you people want?" Rakeem growled. Detective Brown reached over and opened the manila folder. The folder contained pictures of a battered and beaten Andre Bullock.

"Do you know who this is?" Detective Reinhart asked.

"I never seen that person a day in my life," Rakeem said without taking his eyes off Detective Reinhart. Reinhart leaned forward across the table and pushed the folder closer.

"Wrong. Try again. Look closer," Reinhart hissed. Rakeem glanced down at the folder only briefly then looked back at the detective. "A little birdie on the street said you might."

"So we go 'round pickin' people up when birds start talkin' and shit? Fuck you think you is, Dr. Dolittle?" Rakeem laughed at his own joke.

"I'm going to ask you one more time to try again," Reinhart deadpanned. He leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms.

"Where were you 3 weeks ago on a Monday?" Detective Brown asked. Rakeem laughed.

"Bitch, do it look like I track myself with a book? 'Oh, at 5:34 AM on Thursday, I was takin' a shit. At 5:38 I left and went back to my room and fell asleep until I woke up at 7:00 AM and ate breakfast at-"
