Your eyes blink open to the sound of chirping, tropical birds. You groan and lean up from the rocky, cave floor, rubbing your face of its tiredness.
Damn, I guess I must have fallen asleep.
You look forward a see Zarah sitting at a gape in the foliage at the cave's entrance, her head slouched over her knees.
You get up and stride your way over to her side, sitting cross-legged beside her. Before you even have a chance of telling her 'Good morning', she makes the first word.
"Thank you...," she sounds down, not moving her body at all as she spoke to you.
"Hm?" you wonder, glancing at the child.
"For saving me last night, thanks," she turns her head slightly toward you, but keeps her eyes directed to the ground.
You were touched; hearing Zarah's genuine graditude for you made you feel warm inside.
"Those humans," Zarah continued "they always try to hurt me".
"You know them?" You ask, eyeing her wounds wrapped in bandages she was nonchalantly picking at.
Zarah nodded, "The hooded men, they would beat me, but I stopped that".
"Beat you?" Concern washed across your face "Where did this happen?"
Zarah loosened, letting her legs stretch out infront of her "Those ruins you saw yesterday, that was their homes".
You had figured that's what that debris and foundations were, but you had no idea about the violence behind it.
"You must know more about those guys," you conclude in a calm tone "would you like to share that with me?"
You can see tears stream down her cheeks as she limply sat upright, looking out into the jungle.
"My earliest memory-" she began "I remember them pricking a jabbing my skin. When they weren't doing that, I was kept in a small cage, locked tight".
Your eyes widen in shock, but you dare not interrupt.
"They kept telling me how great I was, and they were fascinated about how I could make flowers bloom," Zarah continued "but one day, they gave me a drink that tasted funny, and made me feel fuzzy. The next thing I remember was that I was standing over rubble from the village buildings, and vines were growing everywhere, but the men were nowhere to be seen".
You were surprised of the calmness in Zarah's voice as she revealed her past to you. Her body language said weak and depressed, while her words came with purpose.
"The men keep returning, however," Zarah gritted her teeth "so I ran them off the island again, but each time it just gets harder and harder! Sometimes new people show up with bad intentions too, but I take them out easily, but not the hooded men, they seem to get stronger".
Noticing her shivering shoulders quacking with builtup rage, you gingerly wrapped an arm around her shoulders. Zarah instinctively jumped slightly, startled by your sudden touch, but she slowly calmed down and took deep breaths.
"I get it, I was once in a situation like that too," you related in a soft voice.
Zarah said nothing in reply, curious of what you had to say next.
"I was made by a wizard with his magic and DNA of the original goddess of oceans."
"B-but I thought you said you lived with your dad in a village? Was he a wizard?" Zarah was confused.
"No- well, I guess he was-" you remember how he was working for Gray, the wizard who gave you life, but he ended up saving you from that awful man "I suppose he was, but he left that all behind to take care of me".
Zarah nods, still a bit confused about the odds and ends, but she wanted to move on "If you lived simularly to me and then lost your powers, then do you think that maybe... I can get rid of my powers too?"
Your eyebrows raised, for it broke your heart to hear her want to wish her own abilities away, all while you struggle without your own "I don't think so, Zarah. I was a rencarnation, and I had to return my powers to my past self so their spirit could finally rest. But why wouldn't you want to keep your powers? It's something that makes you special!"
"I don't care about that!" she forcefully shut her eyes, more tears pouring from her face "I just don't want people after me anymore! It's scary!"
You knew you had no way of changing her mind about this, so you decided it to get her where it hurt as a distraction from her current distress "You know, with no powers, you'd just be like a human".
Zarah scrunched up her face in disgust, "No!"
You audibly laugh, making her cheeks turn red.
"If you don't want to be human then embrace who you are as is!" you still remain chuckling as you continue your pep talk "I should know more than anyone thay you really don't know what you've got until it's gone".
Grunting, you raise yourself up off the ground "You need training, so I'm here to help!"
"Training?" Zarah looked up at you in confusion "But you don't have my powers, so how are you going to help me with them?"
"You know," you puff up your chest with pride "I was trained by someone who didn't have my powers-" you glance at the ring still wrapped around your right index finger, and your eyes lit up.
Zarah stared at you silently before you suddenly reached your hand down to her with a gleaming, giddy smile.
"Take my hand, I have a surprise for you!" you were nearly shaking with excitment as Zarah reluctantly took your outstretch hand. You drug her out of the caves and into a small clearing not too far away.
You turn and face Zarah as you plucked your band from your finger and held it out to her. As you stare at it, waiting for her to take it, you immediately get lost in thought.
Sinbad gave me this ring, didn't he? This isn't my original one, but his engagement one he replaced it with....
You shake the intruding thoughts from your head, forcefully placing the ring into Zarah's palm and folding her fingers down around it to hold it tight.
"Wh-what is this?" Zarah opens her hand and looks quizzically at the piece of jewelry.
"Just put it on your finger!" you try to ignore the knot that had formed in your stomach.
"Like- like this?" she slips it on her left index finger, and it fits on there a little loosely, until it began to glow.
You stared at the light with bated breath, watching as the ring magically shrunk to fit onto Zarah's smaller finger. The light begins flickering, and it strobes faster and faster, brighter and brighter, until-
"Harun!"
