We worked side by side
Gathering pine bark from the ground
Shaking the needles from the trees
-
We built that shelter from nothing
Made of sticks and twigs.
So many pine needles covered it,
And we stuffed in the inside.
-
I remember, when we took it down
It stood up even after I took
The ridgepole out
-
So many pine needles
Pounds and pounds.
-
Before we climbed into the cold
We sat with the rest
And laughed and laughed.
-
We ate lasagna
And hot Cocoa,
Before we retreated
Up the mountain.
-
Then we squeezed into the pile of bark
Side by side
In the dark
-
It was a good thing we were both thin
Otherwise
We wouldn't have fit.
-
The in the darkness we lay
Drifting in and out of sleep
-
It was cold, freezing so
And I could here the wind
Whipping up the gully
Making the trees shake and quiver.
