Chapter Seventeen

Lex's POV

The sun was not up yet, surprisingly for a six-thirty time, Sunday morning. The grey glow was around, just enough for myself to see. I woken up early for once, just to be by myself and outside. The chilly morning air didn't help either. I hugged the grey singlet to my stomach further, trying to block out any chills.

There was no noise inside the shack except for Sams light snores and Andys constant rolling around. Felix slept like a dead body but Jake, he rolled around once or twice mumbling something about his mother. Andy needs to get tied to the bed if I'm ever going to have a good sleep here.

Around me I could hear footsteps, unsure of which it came from exactly but I didn't want to look. The footsteps got closer and closer until it stopped, Felix coming down to sit beside me. I looked up at him, tired-and-everywhere-hair surrounded his face, totally not caring about how he looked. Let me rephrase that after he promptly fixed it to normal.

"You're not sleeping well are you?' Felix sighed, sleepiness evident in his voice.

"You should still be sleeping" I commented.

"So should you yet you're here" Felix retorted, laughing slightly.

I chuckled, pulling my hair up and out of the way "True, True"

We stayed like this for a few minutes, just enjoying the company of each other. It was shortly disrupted by a large howl from beyond our eyesight. Hearing it, I was tempted to swear. I didn't want to face off some kind of creature so I stood up and grabbed Felix's arm lightly, hinting we both need to go back inside.

Once inside, the other boys were slowly waking up. The lantern's light was down but there was no need to relight it again. I sat down on the ground beside Jakes sleeping feet, rubbing my eyes frantically.

"Morning sleeping beauty" I laughed as Sam rose to stand up.

Andy slowly got up but he looked around frantically "Is Oscar still here?"

Felix nearly screamed, rushing around the shack for any signs. The only sign that his body shape was imprinted into the bail of hay. I roughly tied my hair up, slinging my backpack over my shoulders

"We better go find him" I sighed.

Felix, Andy and Jake went off looking for Oscar. I re-bandaged Sams wound with the rest of my long clothing, resulting in now having summer type clothes. Sam was thankful for this, he told me so many times.

"Are you okay to walk?" I asked.

He hesitated "I'll be fine, don't worry"

We finally left the shack, my bag over my shoulder slowly walking so Sam could keep up. I couldn't hear any talking from any of the boys or anything for that matter. Sam and I were walking down the main dirt road, keeping an ear out for any movement that wasn't our own.

"Lex" Sam finally spoke.

"Yeah? Whats wrong?" I asked, readjusting the backpack.

"Do you always help people like this? You gave up everything just to protect us- why?"

I was in a stunned silence. I hadn't thought of that but then again, I had been pushing it from my mind for a while now. I didn't want to regret doing this.

"I don't know Sam. When you four turned up and sat on my bench I thought I could just pound you into the ground and be done with it. Im glad I didn't" I sighed, glancing down at the road ahead.

It was quiet before we heard yelling in the bush, Jakes yelling to be precise. We looked at each other and began to walk back to the bush. We passed the road and into the bush.

"Jake where are you?" I yelled out, helping Sam over a log.

"Over here- Oscars a little stuck!" Jake yelled back.

Once the greenery was pulled away Oscar and the two sighed boys came into view. Oscars foot was stuck in a hole in the ground knee deep. I struggle to compress my laughter. Felix glared at me for letting a small giggle slip but got back to work to pulling Oscar out.

I catch Sam who was slipping off his balance "You okay there princess?" I put his arm around my shoulder.

"Does this mean I'm the damsel in distress?" He asked when I sat him down on the log we nearly tripped over before.

"The always-starving damsel yes" I corrected.

this was horrible I'm sorry. I promise next chapter will be more exciting
