Leafheart was organizing herbs with Sandpaw when Goldpatch entered the medicine cat den. His face was clouded with confusion.
"What's on your mind?" She asked. He gazed at the gray she-cat.
"Nothing." He replied shortly. His pelt brushed Leafheart's as he walked away. I know there is something going on! At that moment Frightpaw sprinted into the medicine cat den. "Help! Fawnpaw fell into a sand pit! She's drowning in the sand!" She cried. Sandpaw panicked her sister couldn't be injured! Fawnpaw ran out followed by Leafheart and Sandpaw. Snowbreeze joined them. Once they reached Fawnpaw, they found the worried Birdwing and Healfur. Fawnpaw was no longer visible. Snowbreeze didn't wait for direction, he jumped into the drowning hole. Frightpaw instinctively hopped in too.
"Frightpaw no!" Birdwing yelled. "I have to!" The little cat squealed. "Here! I found Fawnpaw's tail!" Snowbreeze announced. "Pull gently Frightpaw!" Leafheart instructed. Seconds passed while they delicately pulled Fawnpaw out of the sand pit. "That was so brave Frightpaw!" Birdwing was thrilled. "You too Snowbreeze!" Healfur said.
"Sorry to break up the moment but we've got to get Fawnpaw back to camp." Leafheart interrupted. The motionless apprentice lay unconscious, her nostrils filled with pebbles of sand.
Back at camp, Birchbranch stood near the bramble entrance. She waited impatiently as the cats carried her nearly drowned kit to the medicine cat den. Sandpaw's eyes were gloomy, she couldn't think of her sister possibly dying. Leafheart quickly got to work, clearing sand out of Fawnpaw's nose. Goldpatch helped Leafheart with this. Sandpaw, watched them, unable to move. Her eyes now fixed on Fawnpaw.
"Sandpaw, I'd appreciate your help! If you want to be a medicine cat you must help cure patients!" Leafheart snapped. She regretted doing so but she was frustrated, Sandpaw wasn't helping. I don't think she should be a medicine cat, she doesn't react quickly enough. Fawnpaw's eyes started to open at that moment. She cried "Where's Birchbranch! I want my mother!" Birchbranch ran in relieved her kit was alright. "I'm sorry I fell into the hole! I'll never do it again!" Fawnpaw apologized. "Hush now my kit, it was an accident." Birchbranch soothed. "She'll be fine, the I'll give her some tansy to keep her strong." Leafheart reported.
Once the action was over, Leafheart asked Goldpatch to collect more tansy and other herbs. She turned to Sandpaw who was still stunned.
"You have to make your decision." Leafheart said softly.
"What do you mean?" Sandpaw looked bewildered. Her Amber gaze melted Leafheart's heart.
"You need to decide if you want to be a warrior or a medicine cat." Leafheart whispered.
"I....I don't know." Sandpaw was torn.
"It's okay, just make your decision soon."
At sunrise, Sandpaw woke Leafheart up.
"I've made my decision, I want to be a warrior." Sandpaw explained.
"Alright then, I'll talk to Foxstar." Leafheart said. She headed in the direction of the leaders den when suddenly, a loud gasp made her freeze. That sounds like Birdwing!
