Chapter Two

Vanessa's Point of View:

Helping my mom set up the dinner table that night, I wondered where my dad was.

"Mom?"

"Yes Vanessa?"

"Where's dad?" I asked, hoping she knew. My dad was always home from work by now, he never missed out on dinner.

"Oh uhm, he had to work late," she told me, with a nervous look on her face. Something was up, but I decided to forget about it for now. If something was going on, my mom would tell me.

"So what's for dinner Mrs. Reed?" Bethany asked, as she brought in the rest of the plates.

"Beth, you can call me Andrea," my mom smiled, "And we're having steak and mashed potatoes."

As soon as my mom mentioned food, Joey came running into the room. "I heard mom mention steak and potatoes, is dinner done?"

Beth laughed. "No,"

Joey looked disappointed. "Damn it,"

Right as Bethany and I finished setting up the table, the doorbell rang.

"I'll get it, it's probably just the guests that mom invited over, the ones that I had no idea were coming!" I yelled and rolled my eyes. Bethany laughed at my outburst.

Opening the door, I placed a fake smile on my face. "Hi Liz, Luke, come on in, dinners almost ready."

Luke's mom, Liz, smiled back at me as she walked in.

Luke grinned at me as he walked in. "Way to act fake,"

I rolled my eyes. "Fuck off,"

He just laughed as he entered the dining room.

Going into the kitchen, Bethany and I helped my mom put all of the finished food out on the table.

A pot of mashed potatoes in the center, along with a huge plate of steaks.

Digging into the food, I didn't even care about the mess that was probably all over my face.

Bethany laughed quietly as she took in my appearance.

"Nessa, you got a little something on your face." Luke told me, as he tried to hold back a laugh.

Wiping my face, I looked at him boringly. "I'm aware,"

"So how was your first day of school everyone?" Liz asked, trying to make conversation, so this dinner wasn't so awkward.

The same time Luke answered amazing, I answered terrible.

"Why was it terrible Vanessa?" Liz frowned.

"I don't have classes with any of my friends." I told her, shrugging.

"Just lunch," Beth added.

"You have me!" Luke grinned, knowing what I was going to say next.

"Yeah, because you're definitely my friend." I answered sarcastically.

"Well at least you have somebody to talk to," my mom said, giving me a dead look, that screamed don't be rude.

"Could this dinner get anymore weird?" Joey remarked, with a mouthful of mashed potatoes.

"Right," Bethany laughed.

For the rest of dinner, we talked about random things. School clubs that could be joined, how the schools lunch prices were too much, how Luke was thinking of starting a band.
