Softball was an interesting sport. Based on my understanding without being drunk or high, there was a bunch of people in the field trying to catch the ball that the batter hits and if they catch it that means the batter is out and if that happens three times the teams switch spots until someone scores the most points and wins. I was gonna have to have Amber explain it to me. I was never a real sports person. I went to the gym a lot and watched Zac play football. I never really went to baseball games and when I did, I didn't pay attention. It was hard to. Baseball and softball were pretty boring. Amber was the one in the middle throwing the ball to the batter. The crowd would cheer every once in a while. I wasn't sure who was winning, but I think it was Amber's team. The crowd was cheering around me as the teams lined up and shook hands. I stood up and walked off the bleachers. I began walking to the parking lot and pulled my pack of cigarettes out of my pocket. I stuck one in my mouth, pulled out my lighter, and lit it. I returned the pack and lighter to my pocket and blew smoke out of my mouth as I walked. I walked up to Amber's car and leaned against it as I waited.
"Since when do you smoke cigarettes?" I turned around and saw Oliver and Shawn walking over.
"Since I was given cigarettes." I pulled the cigarette out of my mouth.
"Want some weed?" Oliver asked as he pulled a small bag full of weed out of his pocket.
"I have weed." I replied.
"So what are you doing here?" Shawn asked.
"Amber had a game." I nodded towards the field.
"I don't think I've ever seen Jordan Miller at a sporting event for our school." Shawn said.
"Hey I've been to hockey games, I've been to football games!" I replied. "What're you two doing?"
"Late night deals." Oliver said. Of course.
"He came to my house and kept shouting at my window until I snuck out." Shawn said.
"Asshole." I murmured as I stuck the cigarette back in my mouth.
"We gotta go. Jack Caprazinski is expecting me." Oliver said.
"See ya." I said.
"Bye." Shawn said as they walked off. My cigarette was snatched out of my mouth. I turned to see Amber.
"Why are you smoking? Since when do you smoke cigarettes?" She asked.
"You did great today!" I smiled.
"Jordan!" She snapped.
"Jesus Christ you're fine with me smoking weed but not cigarettes?" I asked.
"Weed is not addictive. Nicotine is." She drops the cigarettes and crushed it beneath her shoe. I sighed.
"Alright fine I'm sorry I won't smoke." I said.
"Give me your cigarettes." She held out your hand. I looked at her. Was she for real? "Jordan give me the fucking cigarettes." I pulled out my pack and slammed it down into her hand. She opened the pack and pulled out the remaining cigarettes. About half the pack was left. She bit them all at once and spit onto the grass. Then she gagged and coughed. I couldn't help myself but to laugh.
"Why did you do that?"
"So you can't have them! Disgusting." She dropped the cigarettes and the pack into a nearby trash can. Then she unlocked her car and opened the trunk where she dropped her bag. I was standing right beside her and that's when I noticed a six pack of beer in the trunk of her car. I stopped her as she began to shut the trunk.
"Dump the fucking beer." I snapped.
"No." She said as she shut the trunk. I grabbed her arm. She pushed me away.
"Dump the fucking beer or I will!" I shouted. She ignored me and climbed into her car. She then started it and rolled down her window.
"Are you getting in or not?" She asked without looking at me. I took a deep breathe and walked around to the other side and got in the passenger side. She rolled up her window as I shut my door and buckled my seatbelt. "I hope you know that I'm not planning on drinking all six of those beers at once. Probably not alone."
"I don't care I don't want to see you having beer in the trunk of your car. It's one thing to have beer at a party but another to be buying it." I explained.
"It's just beer Jordan!" I had no words. I just looked at her as she began to drive. "I won't drink it, alright?" She said.
"You better not." I said.
"Are you gonna be coming back to school?" She asked.
"I don't know. I don't wanna go home and live with my mother but I don't have anywhere else to go. It's gonna be awkward for me and Cailyn if I move back in with her." I said.
"Move in with me." She said.
"Wait what?" I looked at her. She was looking at the road still.
"I'm dead serious. You can stay in my sister's room while she's at college." Amber said.
"I'm gonna be in serious debt to your family if I do that." I said.
"No you won't. You'll just be sleeping in Harper's room and eating food she would eat ifshe wasn't at college. No debt." She said. "And if you stay with me you're gonna have to be at family dinners. That means eating with the family for an hour. No family dinner tonight, so what do you want to eat?" Cailyn's words played through my head on repeat. "Recovery is hard. You're going to relapse, you're going to get better." I wasn't sure I could get better. Deep down I wanted to, but for the most part I didn't want to get better. I was fine the way I was. I would've actually liked to be thinner.
