Amber's POV

They said it was gonna be a while before I could go to school again. And at least three weeks before I could leave my house when I got home. And no softball for the remainder of the season or all summer. It sucked ass to hear no softball. I wasn't gonna let Jordan spend her birthday in the hospital because of me. I also wasn't gonna let her spend her birthday in the hospital because of her. She was dying; I knew it, her friends knew it. It was only a matter of days before something terrible happened from her not eating. I was scared for her life. I couldn't bear to lose her. She shifted in my arms as she slept. She was so cute when she slept. I brushed some of her red hair out of her face and behind her ear. I traced my fingers along her protruding collarbones. It was frightening how thin she was. But part of me wanted to strive to be like her. I knew it was wrong to try to strive to be underweight, but I at least wanted a thigh gap.

"How long was I out?" Jordan croaked as she sat up.

"Like an hour." My eyes didn't shift from the ceiling as Jordan laid her head beside mine.

"What time is it?" She asked.

"Dunno." I replied.

"Hello? Earth to Amber?" Jordan snapped her fingers in front of my eyes. I looked at her.

"Hi." I said.

"What's wrong?" She asked.

"Nothing. Just thinking about stuff." I replied.

"Like how hungry you are because you never got that sandwich?" She asked.

"My parents got me it soon after you fell asleep." I lied.

"Oh. Alright." She said.

"Are you gonna eat?" I asked.

"Cailyn made me eat when she got here." Jordan said, but I doubted she was telling the truth. Both of us just lied to one another.

"You know you don't have to lie to me. You can tell me the truth and I won't be mad." I said. She sighed.

"I ate." She snapped.

"Alright. I believe you." I said.

"You don't lie to me either. About anything." Jordan added.

"I don't lie to you." I lied.

"We have a little over a month of school left, what're you gonna do?" She asked.

"Try to do schoolwork here and at home. Get notes and stuff from kids in my classes." I replied.

"I'll do your algebra notes." She said.

"Wait you actually do work in math class?" I joked.

"Yeah." She replied.

"You don't just stare at me drooling the whole time?" I grinned.

"Not all the time!" She muttered. I laughed.

"Alright but you have to make sure you write everything down." I said.

"I will don't worry." She answered.

"So your birthday is Friday." I looked at her.

"Yeah." She said.

"You're going to school." I said.

"Okay." She replied.

"And not coming here." I said. She looked at me.

"Why not?" She asked.

"You're not spending your birthday in the hospital." I ordered.

"I'm coming to see you." She stated.
