Malcolm looks around the room at his mom who looks like any moment she might fall asleep, Jackson who's holding Sevyn , Ty who still looks like he's beating himself up over what has happened, Shaun who's playing a game on his phone and his dad who's leaning against the wall gazing out the window. It's starting to get dark outside and Malcolm knows how scary it is to drive in the snow at night, especially with black ice. He rubs his eyes, feeling tired his self. Whatever medicine they gave him is making him drowsy.
"Yall don't have to stay any longer if yall dont want to. It's getting dark and we dont need any more accidents." He tells them.
"You sure? Visiting hours aren't over until 10:30 and its only 8." His mom says.
"Nah, yall can go. As long as I can breathe I'm fine." Malcolm lets out a long yawn. "I'm tired anyway and I dont want yall watching me while I sleep like creepers."
His mother chuckles and stands up, "Alright fine. We'll go and come back tomorrow morning." One by one everyone stands up and stretches out their bodies. They take turns giving Malcolm hugs, Sevyn hugs him the longest and Ty hugs him with the most passion. For a second Malcolm doesnt want them to leave, he's so used to sleeping in a house where he can either hear Malcolm's tv or Sevyn talking on the phone. Now he's stuck in a big hospital room on a hard bed by his self with this annoying beeping machine and thin covers.
"See you in the morning," His mom says, kissing his cheek.
"Alright, good night." Malcolm gives a final wave of goodbye as his family and friends walk out the door. The soft click of the door confirms they've all left and the room feels even bigger without them. His eyes wander up to the balloon Shaun got him. He smiles at the bottle shaped balloon and shakes his head. Only Shaun, he thinks before closing his eyes and drifting off to sleep.
Downstairs on their way out the hospital, the emergency doors quickly slide open and three nurses rush inside pushing a gurney in front of them. Jackson yanks Sevyn out of their path and everyone steps aside to let the nurse run pass them and down the hall, heading to the elevators.
"His heart is steady but weak!"
"More oxygen to his lungs!"
"Get that shirt off him!"
"Elevate his head to even the bleeding!"
Jackson pulls her along but Sevyn can't help but watch as the doctors wait for the elevator while buzzing around the body, putting their hands against the persons chest and touching his head. The elevators doors slide open just as the cool air outside smacks Sevyn in the face. As the nurses push the gurney into the elevator, they lift the patients head for only a second before the metal doors slide shut. Sevyn gasps.
"Corey!" She exclaims.
Ty stops and turns around, "What?"
"I saw Corey!"
"Yeah, we all did. A couple hours ago." Shaun comments,
Sevyn gives him the death glare, "No, just now. I saw him, he was on the gurney."
"How do you know?" Ty asks.
"I saw the nurses lift his head." Sevyn exclaims. Her mother walks over and places her hands on Sevyn's cheeks, looking back and forth between her eyes. Sevyn scrunches her eyebrows together, "What are you doing?"
"Checking to see if you're sick. I think you're just paranoid honey," Her mom says.
Sevyn pulls her face away, "No I'm not! I saw Corey on the gurney."
"Sevyn---"
"I know it was him!" She insists. Yanking her hand from Jackson's she sprints back into the hospital and goes right to the desk. The lady from earlier slides her eyes up to her. "Was a Cordell Maverson brought in here?"
