It Started with a Wedding

Jared’s side of the story

At the office

He was checking on a blue print when he heard a knock.

          “Jared?” he sees Nelson’s face taking a peak from the slightly opened door.

          “Oh, Nelson…come in”and his eyes went down again to the blueprint. Nelson stops in front of his desk.

          “The foreman on the site in Taejong-dae called me..there are some problem with the materials delivered so I need to go there now to check the situation.”

           “Leave it to Charles. Just tell him to go there directly.”Charles is on another site near that place anyway.

            “But after that he’s going to attend the assembly as our firm’s representative right?”Jared looks at him. 

            “Did Brix left already?” he asked.  

            “Yup..on his way to meet the new suppliers. Could you meet the client for me? Everything’s set you’re just going to present them this  blueprint” Nelson puts down the cylinder on his desk.

            “The one you approved of yesterday.” he added to answer the question shown on Jared’s face.

            “Okay, where’s the meeting place?”

            “Italian restaurant, Grandeur Hotel. Mr. David Kwon. 4pm”. Jared glance at his wristwatch 3:28. He suddenly folded the thing he’s looking at earlier. Hayley, the secretary entered his office with some portfolios.

             “Here’s the files you asked me to bring. Sir Jared”she says after putting them down on his desk.

             “Thanks..I’ll be going out for a while to meet a client.”Jared gave Nelson a nod and the latter goes to do his task. He gets his coat and bag and headed to the door.

             “I’m alone again in this office.”Hayley says to herself while gently shaking her head.

While waiting for the traffic light to turn into green, he looks at his wristwatch..3:15

          “Be quick, will you?..” he whispered as he slowly taps his fingers against the steering wheel.

He looked outside the window and viewed some people on the park on his left. The man and woman are both wearing white while a photographer is asking them on a certain pose. He remembers his own wedding. Everyone was anxiously waiting for the ceremony to start. He was standing there. They might though that he must be nervous and excited but no he’s not feeling any of that. He’s just feeling numb. He doesn’t even recognize the time he spent on that position waiting. Darlene’s mom arrived after checking her daughter on the dressing room. She handed a paper to uncle Yoon. The old man’s face turned red while reading the letter. His facial expression was stiff as he announced that the wedding was off. The wedding hall was filled with whispers from the surprised guests. They expressed their sympathy as they approach him one by one. Darlene’s parents apologized to him, his mom, and sister. He also saw Keith and Aidan with “What the hell happened?” written all over their face.

            After a day, he received a call from her. She was crying as she apologized to him. She told him that she couldn’t marry him for she’s already in love with someone else. She admitted that the day before their wedding, that person told her that he loves her too. She changed her mind and ran away with that person minutes before the wedding. He told her not to worry because he’s alright. He even wished them happiness. People sympathize him but he doesn’t think he needs that. He’s also aware that people are talking about him behind his back for the humiliation he got but he doesn’t care at all. His mom even advised him to take a leave for a few days but he refused. Honestly, he felt relieved. For unknown reason, he seems to breathe again the moment the wedding was cancelled.

He knows that Darlene will be happy with the that guy…

            The light turns green and his flash back ended.
