Numb

Chapter 17

AN- Hey...sorry for the two week wait. Especially with a cliffhanger...That might make me a tiny bit evil. So, extra long chapter to make up for it! Please keep in mind that I am doing my best, but sometimes I have to make people a little OOC, and that this is a fanFICTION. I am making this up as I go.

Christina's POV

We hear the doctor say Lisa's name and immediately we all stand up and rush over to him. He looks at all of us for a second before directing his gaze to our mother.

"Alright, I assume you are the mother?" He asks.
She nods and he continues, "Okay, Lisa is currently alive. We had to intubate her, that means there is a machine that is breathing for her. If she makes it through the night, we hope to have the tube out by tomorrow night." He says calmly.

"She can't breathe on her own? What do you mean if she makes it through the night?!" Christina blurts out, sounding terrified.

"Her airway is very swollen right now, we are trying to bring the swelling down. Her heart is also a bit weak, since it was deprived of oxygen for what we estimate to be about 2 minutes. Luckily, she seems to have normal brain function. We are just being careful with her right now, sometimes in these cases the throat swells even more, and we want to make sure that doesn't happen. At the moment, I have every reason to believe she will make it through the night, I just want to prepare you for any possible problem." He says this all in a soothing tone of voice, trying to calm us down.

"Can we see her?" My mom asks desperately.
"Yes, but only two at a time please, and I want to warn you that she is hooked up to a lot of machines right now, the tube in her throat can look and sound a bit scary at first. And we have her on sedatives now, so that she doesn't wake up and reject the tube that is breathing for her." He replies, then tells my mom the floor and room number. She turns to the rest of us and says, "Okay, your father is at home watching the boys, can someone call him and let him know that she's okay?" "I will" Kath says, and walks a few feet away.

"That doctor said that only two of us can go at once, so we need to decide how we are going to do this."
I look around and my heart melts at the sight Lauren's desperate face, Dani must see the same thing, because she says, "I think you and Lauren should go first Mom, we can wait a few minutes." Amy looks like she is about to protest but catches sight of Lauren's face and decides to shut up. Lynne nods and Lauren follows her to the ICU.

Katherine walks back over to the group, and tells us that dad knows about Lisa, but they haven't told Joey or Alex why she is in the hospital yet, they don't want to scare them. We all nod in understanding and fill her in on the decision. "Okay, so when Mom and Lauren are done, how about Christina and Amy go in, and then Dani and I, sound good?" We all agree and then sit down, not knowing what to say to each other at this point.

Lauren's POV

I follow my mom through the hospital corridors, heading to Lisa's room. I am so relieved that she is alive, but I am kind of scared that the doctor said she can't even breathe on her own. Before I know it we are at the ICU, we walk down to Lisa's room and my mom hesitated a second before opening the door.

She immediately moves to the chair by Lisa's side and sits down, grabbing her hand and putting her hand over her mouth. Her eyes are getting watery, like she might cry, so I quickly look away.

I then find myself looking at Lisa, she is wearing a hospital gown, and now that she isn't in her baggy clothes, I can really see just how thin she is. She has a blanket pulled up around her torso, and I look at her face, freezing at the sight of the large tube protruding out of her throat, it looks like it would really hurt. I see that she is also connected to what looks like a heart monitor, that also shows her blood pressure. I don't know what it is supposed to say, so I just ignore it. It's beeping, and that's all that counts. She just looks so small, and weak. It's not like her at all.
