THE SHOCK ON MCKINLEY'S face was apparent. she could not believe her friend had snooped in her messages without her permission. nonetheless, she answered scout's question with a simple, "he's a friend." the brunette was not satisfied with the answer and pressed on, "that's it?"
"what do you want me to say scout?" mckinley asked, confused as to why her friend was bothering her so much over a simple text. "i want you to admit it!" scout said. "admit wha-" realization dawned on her face, "holy shit. you think i'm cheating on daniel."
"are you saying you're not?" scout asked disbelievingly. "what the hell is wrong with you scout? of course i'm not! do you even know me?" she almost screamed. mckinley was furious with her friend and even more, she was disappointed in herself for giving off the impression that she would do something like that.
scout and mckinley had been best friends since they were 5 years old. they knew everything about one another and had always stuck by each other's sides. after all of that, scout still thought mckinley would cheat on her boyfriend? she thought scout was better than that, but clearly, she wasn't.
"scout," mckinley began in voice barely above a whisper, "i think you to leave." mckinley didn't want to kick her friend out but she just couldn't stand to be around her any longer. "wait, kin. please, i'm sorry. i just," scout shook her head, "i didn't know what to think." mckinley almost laughed at her friend's poor excuse.
"i don't believe that for a second. obviously you could think enough to read the notifications on my phone, decide they were worth snooping through my messages, and then come to the conclusion that i was cheating on the boy i love." mckinley's brave face faltered for a second as she fought back tears. she truly didn't want her best friend since forever to leave, but, it had to be done. she didn't think she could do this on her own so she had to call for backup.
"serenity!" mckinley called, "come here for a second." a slightly shorter and younger version of mckinley popped her head into the room, "hey kinny what's up?" mckinley took a deep breath and asked her sister, "renny can you walk scout out? she's kinda tired and she's ready to go home." she smiled a weak smile and gestured to the brunette who was standing next to her.
serenity could tell that the story was a coverup for something bigger. but, seeing as her sister had tears in her eyes, and she never cried, serenity decided not to pry. "yeah sure. come on scout. let's go." the two walked out of the room, with scout taking one last regretful look at her best friend.
mckinley managed a small wave and, as soon as she heard the door of the apartment click shut, she collapsed onto her bed. she cried silently into her pillow until she felt a hand on her shoulder. she looked up and saw her boyfriend's face.
"hey love, you can tell me what happened later. for now, come here," daniel held his arms out for mckinley and she fell into them. she cried into his shoulder until she fell asleep. daniel tucked her in and placed a soft kiss on her forehead. before exiting her bedroom, he wrote a note for her and left it on her nightstand.

i don't want to leave you here alone tonight so i'm gonna sleep on the couch. wake me up if you anything, and i mean anything. you don't deserve to be this sad darling. you are the most wonderful, sweet, caring person i know and i love more than words can say. we'll talk in the morning sunshine.
