"KIN!" SCOUT PULLED HER friend away from the boys so she could speak with her privately for a moment. "what's up cookie?" kinley asked her friend curiously. "so, before i say anything, i need you to promise me something." nodding her head in understanding, mckinley motioned for her friend to continue. "don't freak out okay?" she lowered her voice, "the boys are right there and i really do not want them to here what i'm saying." mckinley nodded, her face morphing into one of confusion.
scout took a deep breath, "i'm going to ask blake out tonight," she said, quickly slapping a hand over mckinley's mouth before she could squeal. nevertheless, the girl began jumping up and down slightly, elated for her best friend. "i'm so happy for you cookie!" she threw her arms around scout, enveloping her friend in a crushing hug. pulling away, she asked, "so, how are you going to do it?" scout began telling her the plan, mckinley making a few tweaks here and there as they went along.
a few hours later...
"hey scout?" reece asked as he walked into the kitchen, "can i talk to you for a moment?" she looked up and nodded, unsure of what the conversation was going to be about. reece leaned against the kitchen counter and scout leaned against the island so she was facing reece. "yeah sure, what about?" reece sighed, scrubbing a hand over his frustrated face. "it's mckinley. she's running so hot and cold on me. yesterday, when we went sightseeing, she spent the whole day with me, we even held hands. we were drifting apart because of the distance, so i thought that spending some time together would fix that. but then today, she hardly spoke to me at all. i don't know what's going on but i like her, a lot. and i used to think she felt the same but now i'm not so sure."
scout squirmed slightly, she knew exactly what was going on with her friend. but she didn't know if she should tell reece or not. on one hand, if she did, maybe reece and kin could finally get together and scout knew that would make her friend happy. but on the other hand, in kin's mind, her fears were real and justified. so even if reece did know about them, there's no way to tell if it would it make a difference. scout weighed her options for several more moments before reece interrupted her thoughts, "please, scout. i know you know something. does she not like me? is that it?"
scout looked at the desperate, pleading boy and knew she couldn't do nothing about it. but she also couldn't betray her friend's trust. "she likes you reece, a lot," scout began, "but she doesn't want a relationship right now because-" scout cut herself off before when she realized she was over sharing. reece looked unappeased with scout's meager answer. "because what scout?" reece pressed. "i can't, i cant tell you," she whispered, her wall of defiance slowly dissipating. reece's face crumpled into one of hopelessness, "oh, okay. i guess it just wasn't meant to be then." he began walking out of the kitchen to where everyone else was watching a movie.
"reece wait," scout took hold of reece's arm and pulled him back to the kitchen. "she's scared reece, she doesn't want to wreck another relationship like she did with daniel. her words, not mine," scout quickly added. "oh," reece breathed, "she doesn't have to worry about that." scout nodded in agreement, "exactly what i've been telling her but she won't listen to me. maybe she'll listen to you?" "i guess i'll just have to try and see." reece set out of the kitchen again, resolved to talk to mckinley the next day.
the doorbell rang just then and scout went to answer it. she saw a pizza delivery guy waiting on the front step. she payed him and took the pizza inside, scout brought it to the kitchen and stared at it for a few moments. mckinley strolled into the kitchen but froze when she noticed the pizza. "is that it?" she whispered. unable to speak, scout simply nodded her head. mckinley walked over to her friend and planted her hands on the girl's shoulders. "you've got this cookie. i believe in you. you are a funny, strong, confident, and beautiful girl. blake would be a fool to say no to you. but, let's be real, why would he? that boy has been smitten since he saw that instagram picture of you." scout took a deep breath and nodded, "okay, i'm ready. get reece and george out of there and i'll do it."
a few minutes later, scout took the pizza and walked into the living room where blake was sitting alone. he smiled at the sight of scout, "hey shortcake," noting the box in her hands he asked, "did you order pizza?" filled with nerves, scout only nodded. once she calmed down, she began, "blake, i'm gonna need you to not talk for the next few minutes, okay?" he nodded and she continued. "blake i like you. i like you a lot. you're the funniest, most down-to-earth guy i've ever met. you have the biggest heart and you pay attention to the little things. you can make me happy just by being around you. you're so generous and caring and talking to you is my favorite thing to do. i feel so comfortable around you in a way that i've never felt with anyone else. with that in mind," scout opened the pizza box, "will you go out with me?"
the pizza had those words spelled out in toppings. overcome by emotion blake only nodded and pulled scout into a deep hug, full of emotion and love. "so that's a yes?" scout asked, grinning from ear to ear. "yes of course you fool," blake answered before wrapping the girl in a hug again.
