THERE WAS A KNOCK AT mckinley's bedroom door and she rushed to answer it, finger-combing her hair as she did so. kinley swung the door open, revealing reece wearing a black and white striped tee tucked into black pants with a burgundy jacket over top. "you look nice," she commented as she gave reece a once over. he smiled, blushing slightly at the compliment. "thanks, you look beautiful, as always." mckinley's cheeks flamed at the boy's sweet words. he held out his arm for her, "you ready?" she nodded, "just give me a second to grab my things." mckinley quickly picked up her phone and put it into her small purse before accepting reece's hand.
he led her to the car, allowing her to play music as they began the drive. "where are we going?" mckinley asked. reece smiled slyly, "no way am i telling you. you'll have to wait," he stated. kinley slumped in her seat, "how long exactly do i have to wait?" he thought for a moment, "about a half hour." kinley groaned at that and slumped down even further in her seat. reece laughed at her reaction and reached over the console to hold her hand. the two laced their fingers together and sat that way until they reached their destination.
"close your eyes," reece told the girl as they approached the beach. she complied, shutting her eyes and covering them with her hands. reece told the girl to wait in the car for a few minutes, and then went to set the picnic area up. kinley impatiently fidgeted in the car until reece returned. he opened the car door and held out a hand to help the girl out. he led her over to the picnic blanket and sat her down. "ready?" he asked kin as he sat down across from her, she nodded, "open your eyes kinley." she opened her eyes, and her jaw dropped at the spread before her eyes.
"reece you didn't!" she reached over and gave him a hug, "this looks amazing!" reece grinned at her reaction, pleased with himself for making kinley so happy. "i'm glad you like it, you deserve this." finally noticing where she was, mckinley turned to admire the beach. "and the beach! how did you know i love beach picnics?" reece smiled sheepishly, "scout told me, the boys and her pretty much helped set all of this up. scout even made some of the food." opening the picnic basket kinley told him, "well if they put in all that work we might as well dig in." and so they did, they ate and talked and laughed. both of them happier than they had been in a long while, all because they were together.
