THE GANG ARRIVED AT THE pier at the perfect time. crowds of people were flocking away from the boardwalk, tired from their long day of fun. the lines were short and there weren't many people left. reece was practically jumping up and down, giddy with excitement. "oh! i wanna go on that, and that. ooh, and that!" he said pointing at different hulking roller coasters that scared the crap out of scout. she reached for mckinley's elbow, "i don't think i can do this cupcake," the girl whispered, already trembling with fear. scout had a deathly fear of rollercoasters and anything that involved large drops. she had been on one when she was nine and after the terrible experience, had vowed to never set foot on one of those awful machines again.

mckinley put her arm around scout's shoulders, "it's alright cookie, you'll be okay. do you want me sit this one out with you?" she asked, concern lacing her expression. "no, no. you go spend time with reece. he won't be here for long and i want you to have fun. i'll just sit this one out," scout said, giving mckinley a reassuring squeeze. she turned slightly and caught blake's eye. his flirty smile quickly morphed into one of concern when he saw her expression. he slowed slightly and, mckinley, noticing this, sped up and fell into step with reece.

immediately the two began laughing and smiling. scout's spirits lifted slightly seeing her best friend so happy. she had been happier than ever recently and scout knew that it was all due to reece. she had a bounce to her step, a twinkle in her eye, and she had been laughing more than ever. she admired the boy for being able to make her best friend so happy but she also worried for mckinley and daniel's relationship and how it would fare with mckinley's newfound friendship. scout knew mckinley loved daniel but she also knew that mckinley felt something more than friendship with reece, even if she herself hadn't realized it yet. scout knew her best friend better than anyone and she could tell that her friendship with the boy went deeper than that.

scout felt a gentle hand on her shoulder and was snapped out of her thoughts. she turned to her right and saw blake's worried face facing her. "what's wrong shortcake?" the boy asked, lightly nudging the girl's shoulder. she brushed his worry off, "it's no big deal, i promise." he gave her a disbelieving look and she scrunched her nose at him, "i promise! it's just that i don't really like roller coasters. so i'm gonna sit out while everyone else goes on the rides." he raised his eyebrows, "and you seriously believe that i'm going to allow you to sit all by yourself while everyone else goes and has fun?"

her face reddened, "well, i suppose not, but i didn't want to take away from your day by forcing you to hang out with me." blake's jaw slackened slightly, "do you even know why i agreed to coming here? it sure as bloody hell wasn't so i could spend some more quality time with reece and george!" scout's face was screwed up in confusion, "then why did you come?" the dark-haired boy shook his head, laughing lightly, "i came for you shortcake."
