MCKINLEY CLEARED HER throat and let corbyn and zach in. she led them to the living room where reece, george, and blake were all standing, staring the two guys down. mckinley and scout stood in the midst of all the tension. scout leaned over and whispered to kinley, "there's a lot of testosterone in the room right now." the two exchanged an amused look before corbyn broke the strained silence. "who are these guys mickey?" he asked stiffly. kinley laughed nervously, "this is reece, george, and blake," she told him, gesturing to each boy. breaking their staredown, zach turned to mckinley, "kinny, please. just talk to us."
reece stepped forward, in between the boys and mckinley. "she clearly doesn't want to talk about it. you guys should just come back later," he told corbyn and zach. "who even are you?" zach asked moving towards the boy. reece faltered slightly, "i'm, i'm mckinley's friend." "good for you, so are we. now move so we can talk to her," corbyn told the boy. "i don't think he will," blake chimed in, stepping up next reece. george did the same, "whatever you need to talk to her about can wait." "it actually can't, and if you knew what was going on then you would know that. but clearly, you don't. so the three of you need to move so we can talk to kin." zach said, moving closer to the boys. reece, george, and blake followed suit.
"okay guys, relax," kinley told reece, george, and blake, "i appreciate your protectiveness, but i think i do need to talk to them." she met reece's eyes and tried to assure him, "i'll be fine reecie." he didn't look happy or reassured as kinley led zach and corbyn to the kitchen where they could talk. zach and corbyn stood on one side with their arms crossed and mckinley stood opposite them, looking very apprehensive. the two stared at the girl expectantly, waiting for her explanation. "i'll tell you alright. but, you're gonna hate me." corbyn's rocky exterior softened, "as long as you didn't cheat on him, i can assure you that we won't hate you." "i didn't cheat on him! i wouldn't." zach smiled ever so slightly at the girl's panic, "we know you wouldn't, that's why he said it."
"just tell us what's up mickey," corbyn told her. mckinley sighed deeply before spilling, "i don't love him as much as used to. daniel was my world at one point and now, it's just not the same anymore." zach noticed the tears gathering in mckinley's eyes and pulled her into a hug. "it's okay to grow out of a relationship kin. it's normal and it doesn't make you a bad person." zach told the girl. "never thought i'd say this but, zach's right. you broke up with daniel out of respect for him and, while he may be sad now, that won't last forever." kinley pulled away from zach, drying her eyes as she told them, "thanks guys, that means a lot. and i know i may have lost daniel but i really hope i don't lose you guys too." corbyn gave her a reassuring smile, "you definitely won't."
