I Won't
My feet hurt as I ran through the muddy terrain. The weapon in my hand gets heavier each step I take. I know he's in there.
I scan the battlefield. Not enough bodies are falling. I have to win this one. I need to be the victor.
My orders play back in my head. Can I do it? When the times comes, can I do it? The steps of the fortress seems steeper than it did from a mile away.
Something caught my eye. A shield maiden climbing the steps of the fortress. This is the first time I have seen her in a long time. I have a strong feeling I know why she's here.
I swing his old sword that I have adopted at soldiers that stood in my way. In the heats of battle, I find myself becoming a lot more like him. A ruthless monster.
She is getting closer. I told the others to go their posts. I'm going to face her on my own.
I scream as I finish the last one off. He brings out the worst in me. I'm glad he left. I hope I am. But, I can't focus on that right now.
I just sat there, waiting for her rage. I know she's angry, no, infuriated with me. She's been training with them. She could take me. But not for long.
I reached the weapons hall. I matched with a pair of ocean blue orbs. He was waiting for me. Sitting alone here with his fragile legs tied together and a new sword in his hand. I clench his old one in mine. I can do this.
She's heaving. Her breath rapidly goes in and out. She clutches the familiar weapon within her grasp, giving me an answer. Her orders are clear as day. She can't do it. I won't do it.
My adrenaline has peaked. No words were spoken as I take off towards him. Swinging the sword over my head and bringing down onto his. Breathing suddenly became difficult to achieve.
Her face is centimeters from mine. If she wasn't so furious, I could kiss her and tell her to go. She makes me so conflicted.
My body would not leave this position. My arms pushing down the sword to the metal of his, my legs on either side of his tied ones, and my eyes locked on his ocean-blues. His face saying no curses. Only affection was the emotion that was detected. I can't do it.
"You can't. I won't," I tell her softly. She gasps, bringing tears to her eyes. I take my hand off of my sword and place it on her cheek. At that, she closes her eyes and lets the swords fall. I pull the back of her thighs and bring her closer to my body to where she straddles my lap. I bury my head into the crook of her neck. I listen to her sigh as she pulls her arms around me.
"I won't."
