There's more where that came from
"Shut up." I laugh harder as I playfully smack my hands on the glove department. His laugh sounds throughout the car, becoming infectious by the second. I wish he was always like this.
"How could you be 19 and still not know how to drive?" It's a genuine question. Once she told me this wonderful piece of information about herself, I stopped the car entirely.
"Well, it's mostly because I was living in the middle of San Francisco. So, it was either walking or taking the bus to places you needed to go to." He turns his head in pure amusement. His eyes are wide and he flashes me this big smile.
Forget the restaurant, I'm making it my mission to teach her how to drive. I push my door open and she gives me a confused look. "Get out."
He gets out of the car and I realize what he's doing. I stay stationary in my seat. He walks around the car to get to the passenger side door. He pulls it open and flashes me another famous smile. "No way."
"Come on. Get out." She doesn't move a muscle, so I try to think of different ways to convince her to learn a task that everyone should learn. "I'll be here the entire way. I'll teach you everything. Come on, it'll be fun."
I continue to shake my head and his convincing smile. "Not happening, Shawn."
"You're going to have to learn at some point. Better with me than some boring instructor."
That is true, no matter how much I don't want it to be. I smack my head against the headrest of my seat and stare up at the ceiling of the car. I sigh as I say, "Fine." He extends his hand to me. I roll my eyes at how cute he is and take his hand. I step out of the car and he moves to occupy my former seat. I walk around the car and open the door to the drivers seat. Once I sit down again, I'm greeted with another photo shoot worthy smile. This million dollar pop star not only loves music, performing and muffins, but he also loves to torture me. "We're going to die, you know. I hope you're prepared for that."
There's that witty humor I love. "We're going to be fine. Put on your seat belt." I repeat as she obeys my command. She places her hand on the wheel and waits for further instruction. "Turn it on." I smile wider at her ignorance. She turns the engine over and it starts up. She takes a deep breath and looks at me. I'm so thankful that I'm the one that can teach her new things, no matter how important or juvenile. I'm glad she chose me. "Put your foot on the break." She looks down at her feet and accidentally places her foot on the gas, causing a large roar from the engine. She yelps and takes her foot off of the gas as well her hands. They move to her face as she covers herself from her own fear. I erupt in laughter. "It's the one on the left, hun."
"Yeah, I know that now."
Her fear continues to flood my excitement. "Try again." She slowly places her hands back onto the steering wheel after she hears my words. She successfully puts her foot on the break. I look out on the vacant road ahead of us to make sure there's no one there. "Alright, now put the car out of park and into drive." She looks down at the counsel and a flash of confusion consumes her face. "This lever right here, hun. P is for park. D is for drive." She nods her head. She places her hand on the lever and moves the car out of park. She quickly places her hand on the steering wheel with the other one. "Ok, now slowly let your foot come off of the break." She nods her head once again and takes another deep breath. She lets the air out of her lungs and my smile comes back. She lets her foot off of the break too fast and the car jolts forward. She panics and presses her foot on the break too hard, causing us to lurch forward. I start up laughing again and the fear is back on her face. "Slowly, slowly." She nods again.
"Ok, I can do this."
She tries to talk herself down. "Yes, you can. It's easy. Just slowly let your foot off of the break." She takes a second before she does so. She slowly lets go of the break and we drive at about 3 mph down the road. "Ok, now slowly press down on the gas." The car goes faster down the road and I cheer at the top of my lungs. "You're doing it. You're driving a car!" The car suddenly comes to a stop and she puts the car in park.
"Oh my god! I -- I just drove a car."
She practically jumps in her seat. In the middle of one of her little hops in her seat, she reaches over to embrace me in a hug. I basically reach over the center counsel to make sure our chests were touching.
"Thank you. Thank you so much, Shawn."
I pull away from her. Once I see her face centimeters from mine, I stop laughing. Freckles. She has freckles. Why haven't I noticed that? I must have been too distracted by her eyes. "No problem. It was my pleasure." She notices I'm staring at her. Her eyes slip to my lips and my breath hitches. She leans forward slightly and I take this as permission. I place my hand on her cheek and my lips go to hers. She lets out another staggered breath. Her hands go to my neck and mine slips further into her hair. She tastes sweet against my tongue. I won't mind getting used to this. She pulls away and slouches back into her seat. Her fingers go back up to her lips. She lets out a chuckle and I do the same. "Best first date ever?"
"Oh, hell yeah. I hope there's more of that. ... The driving."
I slowly nod my head as I look out on the road. I whip my head back towards her once I hear her say under her breath,
"And the kissing."
I laugh once more. "There's more where that came from." She looks up at me from her feet with her bottom lip trapped in between her teeth.
