Shambles of Happiness

"I'm not going to get it." I sit on the couch next to him, intently watching the screen. He leans in front of me, his face centimeters from mine.

"Yes, you are. I'm predicting it now." I lean in to peck her lips. I can tell that she's nervous, but I'm not lying. I do think she's going to it. The rest of her friends are standing around expressing their support as they patiently stare at the TV.

"How many times do I have to tell you that you are not a psychic?" He chuckles as he moves back next to me.

"But I am. I promise. Just you watch." I drape my arm over her shoulders and she sinks into me again. We both watch the new outlet continue with it's normal routine, until it dramatically switches to another anchor. She holds a paper in front of her and talks to the camera.

"Now, for the news you all have been waiting for. The results for the Oscar Academy Awards are in."

I tense up, not wanting to move. His fingers tangle into mine. He sighs next to me, letting the heavy air exit out of his mouth. The woman reads off various categories with their elected nominees, but nearing the end, she looks straight into the camera.

"For Best Actress,"

I shift nervously under her. I look down to her and find that she's screwed her eyes shut. I kiss her hair and close my own eyes.

"Viola Davis for Tubman, Octavia Spencer for Thunder Force, Jennifer Lawrence for Don't Look Up, Amy Adams for The Woman in the Window, and ..."

The last name rings in my ears. I lean forward with my face in my hands. Silence ensues as I quietly start to weep.

Her friends jump up from their seats and rush to her. All of them touching her some way, hugging her, patting her back, wiping away her tears. I smile widely at my girlfriend, who cries for her accomplishment. I know that she has waiting for this moment for her entire life.

At one point, they all release me once they see my smiling crying face. They all congratulate me in some way, but I place my face into my hands and cry more. I feel him move away from me, but his touch appears shortly on my thighs as he kneels in front of me. My friends awe when he takes my hands away from my face.

Her face is in shambles of happiness when I finally get to see it. She leans forward to me once more, placing her forehead on mine. She closes her eyes again as I speak softly to her, "What did I tell you? Congratulations, Oscar nominee." She chuckles and wraps her hands around my neck. I hear more cheers from her friends as I kiss her lips.
