Growing Up

"Alright, here we are." His grasp on my hand and the skirt of my dress becomes tighter by the second as we approach the classroom. His big eyes with the color that he accumulated from his father stare up at me.

"Can we go home, please?"

I crouch down to him once his eyes find me walking up to him from behind her. She places a hand on my shoulder blade. The coolness of her engagement ring sends shivers down my spine as I speak to my son, "I know this may seem scary, buddy, but I can tell you now that you are definitely going to have fun."

"But I want to have fun with you."

I crouch down along with my husband. The scared boy in front of me doesn't want to let us go yet, and it hurts my heart. "You will have fun with us, bud, but it's time that you have fun with other kids."

"Remember, here, you are going to learn about so much that one day you will be smarter than both me and your mom." Our son smiles and nods his head at that. Suddenly, we all hear our son's name being called from inside of the room. We all look to see one of his friends from preschool. A kid that we had invited several times to parties and play dates. As soon as we see him, I can tell that she relaxed. Our son looks back to us and scoops us up in a tight hug. Letting us go, my wife places a kiss on our son's forehead.

"How about after this we'll go get an ice cream cone?"

"Okay, you'll be here as soon as I'm done right?"

"Of course, bud, we'll be right here."

He walks away from us and into the room. When he reaches the doorway, he turns and gives us a small wave. A tear falls down my cheek. I knew earlier that I was going to get emotional and at this point I don't care. My baby is growing up.

I wave back to him and watch as he runs after his friend at one of the desks. I look find her in tears. My hand goes to her hip and I pull her in to place a kiss on the side of her forehead. A tear pricking the surface of my eyes as well.
