Heavy Metal

Bullets flying one after another. Screams from mangled bodies attack every eardrum. Dirt spraying faces making it hard to see. Searching through a crowd of brave men and women. Hoping to see one face in particular.

The heavy metal resting in my hand symbolizes the weight of bodies that will gain nothing but darkness. Point, trigger, shoot. Point, trigger, shoot. Point, trigger, shoot. I repeat the mantra in my head as multiple beings rush towards me with the intention to kill. I look around after another falls. The face that burns into my sleep is gone from my view.

I find his build from a couple yards away. He's looking for me, too. His large, muscular body can still be defined through his uniform. My heart squeezes once he finds me. Another bomb goes off in the distance behind him, making the earth rip out of itself. He ducks his head and begins to run towards me.

I see her about a couple yards away and I panic at her state. She looks at me wide eyed. She shouldn't be here. I need to get her out of here. Another bomb sounds and I pick up my pace. Each step becoming heavier and heavier the closer I get to her.

He stumbles towards me and I decide to meet him in the middle. I ran forwards. Someone catches my eye. Killer crazed orbs. I lift my heavy metal to point and pull the trigger. The human being falls to the ground as I continue on my pursuit towards the one person that can ever make me feel like someone other than a man killing machine.

She lifts her weapon towards someone rushing her and I run faster. Once she shoots, I let out a relieved breath. I'm only a few feet away. I can see the dirt that has settled on her exposed skin.

I look up to find him again. He's got blood running down his cheek from a cut that was probably caused by the flying wreckage. I need to get him out of here. I reach out to touch him. I'm so close. A gunshot sounds. His body freezes.

A loud pang invades my ears and I pain soars in my upper back. My body lands on hers. She looks down at me in confusion. We slide down to the harsh earth. She catches me in her grasp and I'm short of breath.

He slides down into me and I choke out a breath. An eternal pain throbs in my chest. I look across the terrain and spot the culprit still in possession. They press their machine not exactly knowing they have just done. I place him lightly in the dirt and grab my metal. I stand and let go of a round one after another. Watching every bullet enter this murderer's body. Screaming louder with every one. They fall and I hover over them. Pulling the trigger till I'm out.

I cough out a staggered breath. Something's really wrong. I lift my head off the ground, feeling some dirt stick to my sweaty face. She continuously shoots at someone. She's screaming as she shoots the dead warrior. Her gun clicks, signaling to her that she's out of rounds. My head hits the ground again as I try to breath normally. She turns around towards me and takes off running.

Within a matter of seconds, I'm back at his side. I throw my empty machinery behind me and I slide down next to him. I lift his head up from the ground. He struggles to bring himself up to me. I wrap my arms around his upper body. My hand comes in contact with something cold and wet. I turn my palm. I'm stained red. A drop of water lands on it, making me realize that I have been crying. I look back at his face. A bomb goes off behind us. I press my body over him as another wave of dirt falls on top of us. This can't be happening.

She leans back up and I place my gloved hand on her cheek. Knowing that this is the last time. She sobs further.

"John, no. Don't! I'm right here, please! Don't!"

I love this woman. I love her so much and I can't believe I won't be spending forever with her. I just have the rest of my life. I just have a few seconds. I drag my thumb across her tear soaked face. "I love you."

"I love you. Please don't leave me." I squeeze him tighter into myself. I let out another cry scanning the field for any allies. I can't leave him here. Oh god, this can't be happening. I look down at him again and I can tell he's fading. I lean my head towards his to connect my lips with his. I taste the salt of my tears as I stay here for a second. I wanted to spend the rest of my life with this man and he's being taken away from me.

She parts from me. "I'm sorry." I watch as her voice fades till I can't hear anything anymore. She still looks beautiful even though she's crying. My beautiful angel. She watches me intently as if she's waiting for something to happen. My vision begins to darken. The last thing I see is another tear falling down her cheek. I'll see you soon, kid. I promise.
