The Middle of Nowhere

His steady breath meanders in and out of his lungs. His curious eyes searching between the trees through the front window of my car. I spin the wheel to take us down the dirt road off the highway. The same highway he stopped at an intersection to drape his jacket over my freezing body. When he whispered to me his true feelings, even though he's married and I'm taken. He thought I was sleeping, but I heard every word of his loving confession. And since then, I have been planning for him in my life. I broke up with my asshole of a boyfriend and spent every waking moment with this man sitting next to me. I glance at him every other second. I watch as he slowly becomes a kid in a candy store. His eyes go wide at the large trees climbing their way up to the sky. I smile as he finds the cabin in the woods. He gasps silently under his breath. My expression widens at his excitement. After I told him that I wasn't going to see the jackass again, I could literally see the relief flood throughout his entire body. After I told him that I wanted to see him after filming wrapped, I could see the nervousness rush over his face. After I told him that I brought a cabin in the woods, I could see the longing in eyes when he asked if he could see it. Now, he's here. With me. And me. Wanting to hear the same words over and over again once he first said them.

'You'll never know, Checkered Pants.'

They ring in the back of my skull. I miss them. I want them. I need them. I have to have them. The car comes to screeching stop. The passenger door flies open as he escapes the vehicle without a word. He stands present in front of the log cabin in the middle of nowhere. He stares at the old fashioned window panes and potted plants on the roofed porch. I jump out of the car after him. I don't even try to turn off the ignition. I walk briskly towards him, but the closer I get the slower I step. I end up beside him, starring at it just as fondly as he is. He turns to me, sensing I'm near him again. His face solemn. My hand goes to his. The eyes that I long for go to the intertwined limbs. A small smile appearing once again on his face. I'm not used to this. This long pause of silence where neither of us are not goofing off or talking about nothing and everything all at once. This ... This is different. He looks over my face, analyzing it like I'm doing the same to his. Then, the unexpected happens. He lowers his forehead to mine. The skin that I haven't touched yet feels amazing on mine. I'm in love with it. I want to touch him more. I feel his thumb graze over my hand as I close my eyes. This state is the one I want to stay in for the rest of my life. Here, in the middle of the fucking woods, standing in front of a old cabin with our hands intertwined and foreheads touching. Eyes closed and breaths mixing.

"I love you, Checkered Pants."

Tears pool in my eyes. I can't believe it. He said it. "I love you, too."
