Charlotte's P. O. V.
Sure enough, I received a lot of notes. Well, not all of them were so bad, some were my new classmates making a friendly introduction and asking for my number, which I realised I didn't have an US number yet. Even in classes where we had to move out of our homeroom, a lot of people stared at me and whispered to their friends. Holly told me to ignore them, though. Apparently it happens to every new student.
Westmore so far seems pretty good, though I did see some rather… disturbing bullying acts which I will not go into detail. As we headed closer to the cafeteria, I realised that Greg said if on the first day of school you don’t rush to get a seat, you will probably end up sitting next to the garbage bin for the rest of the year. I noticed our walking pace and was immediately concerned.
“Holly! Won’t we need to reserve a seat at the cafeteria?” I asked worriedly. Holly looked at me blankly and replied, “No we don’t,” she said, but sheepishly added, “Well, I did tell some of my friends to reserve a seat for us yesterday and they are in the so called popular crowd, so they have some authority over seats. I hope you don’t mind, I’m not really into popularity but being in the ‘in’ crowd has its perks”
I nodded my head, “It sure does. Thanks for helping me though,” I smiled.
“Anytime. Oh yea, do you want to come to my house for a sleepover this Saturday? I’m inviting Angelina as well.” Holly asked. I was about to say no when I realised that it was very common for people in America to have sleepovers, unlike that in Singapore, where everyone was paranoid on a daily basis. Still, I won’t know if Mom and Dadwould allow, though.
“Well, I’m not so sure yet, but why don’t you give me your number? I’ll call you tonight,” I said and Holly agreed. When Holly opened the doors to the cafeteria, a loud, ringing buzz filled my ears. Kids of all shapes and sizes walked around as grumpy lunch ladies reluctantly scooped food onto their lunch trays. As I did a quick skim of my surroundings, I noticed that there is a drinks stall, two main course stall and a snack store.
“Woah, this is pretty epic,” I said to Holly. She chuckled.
“It sure is, but it can be a bit overwhelming at times,” was her reply and Angelina agreed.
“I always skip the queues, so I have my own lunch. Today it’s a tuna sandwich with a bottle of juice. Honestly sometimes I don’t know what the school’s thinking, cramming everyone’s lunch into an hour,” Angelina mused. As we walked around, with Holly being my ‘tour guide’, I finally settled on a salad bowl with a bottle of strawberry juice.
“Nice choice you have there,” a male voice rang in my right ear as I looked up from eating my salad. Surprisingly, it was actually quite good, although Angelina wrinkled her nose upon seeing me buy that.
“Uh, thanks?” I replied, uncertain in what I should reply. The boy laughed.
“Anyways, my name is Jayden, nice to meet you,” Jayden said.
“Nice to meet you too,” I replied. He smiled, before returning to his seat a row in front of me. I looked up from my plate. So this was the “popular” area. Well, it was easy to tell. First of all, everyone has good fashion sense and looked good. Next, they are all huddling in cliques whispering to each other non stop. I’m not really bothered about who is pretty or who has a cute butt. In fact I don’t even care to be popular. Somehow, I just am, and it bothers me a lot sometimes.
When lunch period was over, we went back to class for the last lesson of the day. And that was history. Finally, I thought, I could go home and relax. Well, I did have a bunch of homework and paperwork for my parents.
History was pretty alright. If anyhting, I breezed through it. It certainly helped that I read a lot of books on history. The bell for dismissal finally rang and everyone made a run for the door.
“Hey Charlotte!” Greg’s voice rang from behind. I paused to wait for him and Rowley.
“How’s your first day?” Greg asked.
“It was pretty good, though Mr Hermes did get a rude shock when he found out that we were related,” I replied, giggling when I recalled his facial expression. Greg, however, gave a sarcastic laugh.
“Oh never mind about that. We hate each other’s guts,”
“Don’t be rude."
“I’m not, he’s the one that’s rude to me in the first place. And you can thank Rodrick for that. Anyway, I’m going over to Rowley’s at four. Do you want to tag along?” Greg asked, though it was obvious he wanted me to say yes.
“Mm, I’ll see if I can finish homework first, I guess,” I decided after a moment’s hesitation. Greg, however, widened his eyes and gawked at me.
“You’re actually serious about homework?” he exclaimed in shock. I nodded in bewilderment. Who doesn’t do homework? I thought. Greg facepalmed and groaned, muttering, “If you say so…”
We walked out of the school in a rather awkward silence and it stretched for the entire journey home. Imagine my relief when we reached home!
