"Okay, gang." Axel spoke, tapping the floor with his hand impatiently. He was sitting on the floor with his legs crossed, and looked pretty excited. "Does everyone understand the rules?"
He stared at Romeo, who rubbed his head and looked at the floor in shame. A list of rules was lying nearby, ready for him to look at it anytime he needed. Even then, though, he wasn't sure he'd play according to them, but not because he was that much of a cheater. It was just that these mortal games proved to be more difficult that he had always imagined. The redhead still nodded, though, not very comfortable with the attention he was getting.
Olivia rolled her eyes at that response, very well understanding that he would definitely slip up during the game.
"And how does the doctor know who to heal?" She asked. Romeo widened his eyes, not expecting to be examined.
"Well, um..." He glanced in the rules one more time. "They just, uh... They guess?"
Jesse nodded calmly, mixing the deck of the special cards. He was pretty much the only person who could be patient enough with the redhead, answering his countless - and usually repeating - questions.
"And what is the most important rule of all?" Lukas sighed. He had been trying to stay calm throughout all the time they were explaining the rules and that nothing in the game was real. However, now he was just hoping they would start soon.
"To stay silent." Romeo replied, without even looking at the list. "Yeah, I-I think I've memorised all of this."
To be honest, he wasn't certain he wanted to play in the first place. Even after all the time he had spent with this group on "friendly" terms he was still rather uncomfortable around them. Not to mention playing a game with them that included murder.
"Okay then!" Jesse clapped his hands one time, sharing a smile with everybody. Petra rubbed her hands, an impatient look on her face. She didn't really understand all that fuss about explaining the rules. If Romeo wanted to play, he would have to learn the hard way while playing. Isn't it what natural selection about?
Radar was nervously shifting his gaze from one of the group to anoother, just waiting for the game to begin. He was always terrible at this sort of games, probably because in the middle of the round he became too excited to keep his identity hidden.
Jesse stopped mixing the cards and walked around the room, handing one to everyone, face down. Axel instantly grabbed his and stared at it, his eyes rolling for a moment. Petra swiftly snatched hers and peeked at it for a moment, before laying it on the floor, face down. Olivia and Lukas were more calm, looking at their cards for a moment or two. Radar's eyes scanned his card, and he nodded weakly to himself. The moment Romeo saw the face of his card, he instantly looked in the list of rules.
The roles had been given, and so the game of "Mafia" has begun.
Jesse was a leader, like always. He was carrying a tiny notebook and a pen, because he could hardly ever remember who was who or who did what.
"The night has arrived." He began dramatically. "And everybody in the town is falling asleep."
Every player obediently closed their eyes, apart from Romeo. He stared at everyone in confusion, frowning slightly, before glancing at Jesse. Something seemed to happen between the two in that moment of silence, because the redhead made a silent "oh" sound and shut his eyes closed.
Jesse sighed and began: "The mafias are waking up to terrorise the streets of our town."
Romeo shivered unconsciously, but didn't dare open his eyes. Instead, Olivia slowly did so, looking around the room before waving at Lukas, who also had his eyes open. Jesse nodded and scribbled their names down, before going on.
