Invisible. That's what Romeo had become. After so many years of working for the good of Beacon Towners, after countless hours he had spent trying to repair the damage he had done, after so many insults and shouts he was invisible again.
He looked out of the window of his tiny cottage, frowning a little when he thought that the streets were slowly growing more and more empty. The night was about to fall on the town and hug it with the dark wings of dream, but when everyone preferred to run away and hide in their lovely houses, Romeo spent his evenings outside. Strolling the streets of Beacon Town, watching everyone drift off to peaceful sleep.
This evening would be no different. The guy stood up, wincing a little as a sharp side of his table got smashed against his thigh. He let out a silent curse and his body went stiff out of instinct, before he could let out a dry breath and actually rub the hurt spot.
There were no more guards lurking around him, ready to hurt him if he said as much as a cuss word. There were no more rules and restrictions for him, no more iron bars to keep him locked inside and no more handcuffs. He was, mainly, free.
The only things that were forbidden, really, were hurting other people, damaging any buildings, stealing stuff and every other law like that. And also Romeo wasn't allowed to leave Beacon Town unsupervised. Nothing serious, compared to his life just a couple of months ago.
And yet, the man couldn't help but feel like there was a noose around his neck, and with every step he took it tightened more and more, to the point where he could suffocate in it. He wanted to go away. He wanted nothing more than to leave, build himself a tiny cottage all alone in the forest and live there for the rest of his rather miserable days.
Maybe he was just tired of this place, where he had spent the last few years working day and night. Maybe his Admin soul was urging him to find some more secluded place where there wouldn't be so many people around. Maybe he didn't feel like he deserved being in Beacon Town after everything.
Romeo walked over to the door out of his tiny house and opened it, sticking his head outside to check if it was dark enough. It was, the night had fallen on the town and the last few people were hurrying to get to safety as soon as possible. Their glances fell on the man - and slid off him like he wasn't even there.
The ex-Admin winced at that, and the ignorance caused something dark to rise in his chest. He was quick to push it down, though. The mere thought of going back to his old self terrified him a lot, but he couldn't really help despising that ignorance.
If only he still had his powers with him, nobody would've dared to look away from him...
Romeo shook his head, it was wrong! He couldn't be thinking that way, not after everything he had already done! He walked out and didn't even bother locking the door. Nobody would come in to steal anything from him, he didn't have anything valuable after all. Nobody would want to sneak in his house to kill him as well.
The people were so used to the man being around them that, at this point, nobody ever looked at him with hatred, nobody made the slicing movement in front of their necks to show Romeo what they wanted to do with him. In fact, nobody looked at him at all, nobody made even a slight movement for him.
And that was the real torture.
The ex-Admin headed towards the center of Beacon Town, stepping right and left every once in a while to avoid colliding with people. Their eyes settled on him for just a moment and then found something more interesting to look at. He didn't fight it, didn't try to get anyone's attention. He just went along with it.
