Jesse's POV.

The sun was nice and warm. I always liked the feeling of the sunlight on my bare skin, as I simply closed my eyes, enjoying the summer. The green grass surrounded me, mixed with colourful flowers, one or two fluffy clouds could be noticed in the blue sky. It was such a lovely day to lay down and do nothing, feeling complete and total union with nature itself what could possibly go wrong?

Well, there was only one thing that didn't let me relax completely. My mother told me to go visit my elder brother, Jay. However, she didn't seem to take into account that he and his wife, Petra, were living in the darkest forest that ever existed. They always said it was cool and quiet there, but I didn't think this way. Dark, spooky trees, wild predators, mosquitoes and all that stuff that would give any normal person nightmares.

- Jessica! - I heard my mother's voice and groaned in irritation. - Where are you?
- Right here. - I growled, sitting up from the warm grass that almost begged me to not move. - Where else would I be?
The woman with long ginger hair walked towards me, smiling. In her hands I saw a small basket, with some cinnamon rolls in it. Welp, here we go again.

- Look, Jessica, you know you have to do this. - My mother said, sitting down next to me. - Your father and I are going mining again, and somebody needs to carry those rolls to Jay.
- Can't he come to our home? - I huffed. - Why do I always have to be this postwoman?
- Your brother and Petra have some problems. - My mother sighed. - You know, they are expecting their firstborn, so Jay can't go anywhere far from Petra in case she needs him. Now, don't be selfish and help him, alright?

Don't be selfish. I rolled my eyes, remembering how often I heard that phrase. Don't be selfish, your parents have to work. Don't be selfish, your brother has his own life. Don't be selfish, you must take care of our cows. It surely looked like they wanted me to totally forget about myself, sacrificing my life for others. They never asked me what I wanted to do, they said I'd had duties and responsibilities. I was so sick and tried of this life!

- Sure, mom. - I sighed. - I understand.
Actually, I didn't, but they didn't need to know.
- Alright. - She smiled, handing me the basket. - You know your way, so I don't think you'll get lost.
- Of course, not. - I stood up, strething my legs. - Well, I guess I'll be on my way now.
The sooner I get this over with, the better.

- Just one more thing. - My mother patted my shoulder. - I know you're smart enough to figure it out yourself, but simply... Be careful.
- Sure, sure. - I nodded, walking towards the dark forest. My whole family always told me to be careful, but what could possibly happen? I mean, there hadn't been any murders or robberies in the last decade, people were friendly and everyone knew everybody. What wrong could possibly happen to an ordinary girl like me?

Sighing, I walked into the dark woods. It was a little bit cool in there, the green darkness surrounded me. I frowned in disgust as a huge, smelly toad crossed my road and disappeared into some bushes with horns. Ugh! How can Jay and Petra possibly live in such a place?! They could've build their house in our village, near my home, and live happilly ever after. But no, they needed adventure and challenge, so they decided to settle down in the farest corner of our world.

- Stupid Jay. - I kicked some small rock on my way. - Stupid Petra. Stupid world!
Somewhere deep inside my soul I knew I was acting selfish, but hey! Why do I always have to be selfless, can't I want something for myself just this once?
A weird idea appeared in my head and I looked around, just to make sure nobody saw my wicked grin. My mother never told Jay how many cinnamon rolls she had made, so he would never notice if I ate one... Or two, or three, or some more. They are going to have the whole basket for themselves!
