Inspired by a song "One Call Away".

"It's her own fault."

"She should've been wiser than that."

"Why doesn't she leave then? Bet she likes it."

"At least she's not alone."

"That means he loves her."

"Not our business."

Jesse lay on her bed, shaking and crying silently. Fresh bruises covered her pale skin that hadn't seen the daylight for a long time. Her long hair that had once been that beautiful shade of black that was darker than night itself were messy and tangled. She hadn't brushed it for days.

Curses and shouts could be heard from behind the closed door, and the girl bit her lip in desperate attempts to shut up, silence her sobs and whimpers. Aiden hated it when she made too much sounds. She couldn't afford to aggravate him, especially not when he was in such a condition.

The door seemed to be so fraile now, so easy to break, to kick open. Her room was tiny, dark and extremely cold - Aiden didn't think she deserved any warmth since she wasn't earning money. It didn't really matter to him that he had been the one to forbid his wife from finding a job because "I know your lot! You just can't stand being loyal to one man, always in need of an affair!".

Jesse just lay on her bed, whimpering silently and waiting for her husband to calm down and go to sleep. Although she knew it wouldn't happen anytime soon, he was far too drunk to just peacefully fall asleep.

Tears were rolling down her cheeks as the poor woman cried there, the horrible pain running rampant in every cell of her body. New bruises were put on top of the old ones, so right now almost all her body was either blue or purple. Apart from the face, that's the only place Aiden didn't like beating up. He didn't want anybody to see what was going on behind the closed doors or something.

And then there was a sound that made her heart skip a beat, a sound that she had been dreaming of for weeks! Something lightly knocked on her window. Jesse froze, her green eyes widening and staring in the ceiling. It couldn't be. It couldn't.

She turned her head, terrified that she was wrong, that it was just a stone, that all her hopes were going to be broken. And - oh, if only you could see the way she beamed at the sight of a big, beautiful white bird that was sitting on her windowsill with an understanding sparkle in its eyes! If only you could see the way she pressed her hand to her mouth! Where, where was the poor wife of an abusive police officer?! Who was that young, bright woman with a happy glow in her marvelous green eyes?!

She let out a breathless giggle and jumped on her feet, joy pulsing in her muscles. Aiden's shouts and screams weren't possible to hear due to the silent laughter that was born inside of her chest.

Jesse crept to the window and opened it, allowing the big white parrot with golden feathers around its neck inside the room. It silently walked in and held up one of its legs.

"Oh my God." The woman gasped, afraid that her husband could hear the painful thumping in her ribcage. She slowly, not able to cope with her shaking hands, untied the rope from around the parrot's leg and picked up a piece of paper that the bird had brought to her. Then froze, too scared to open it now. The thrilling excitement wasn't something Jesse felt very often, and she closed her eyes to enjoy it a little bit more.
