Amelíe and I sat at a table with Brigitte, Fareeha and Satya in the cafeteria of the hospital, waiting for Mako and Jamison to meet us here. Amelíe was letting me share some of her french fries while everyone else had gotten their own food. For the entire time we were there, a sad and almost awkward silence passed over us and lingered. I hate uncomfortable moments like this, so I thought I'd break the silence with something a little light-hearted.
"So," I started, getting everyone's attention. "Have you all joined a club yet?" I asked.
"I joined the Girls Basketball team," Fareeha states. Her sister Satya, without looking up from her book says, "I joined art,"
"What about you, Brigitte?" I ask. "Oh, I joined Volleyball." I then turned to Amelíe.
"What about you Amelíe?" She took a sip of her herbal tea before answering my question.
"Drama." I smiled wildly at her statement. "Oooh! So you'll get to put on plays? Tell me when they are so I can come see you perform!" I exclaim. Amelíe nods before munching on a couple more fries. "Where's Lucio?" Brigitte asks. "He's got soccer practice." Amelíe answered. Brigitte gave a silent 'Oh' before poking at her salad again.Suddenly, I noticed the elevator doors to the cafeteria open and none other than Mako and Jamison emerged. I nudged Amelíe. "They're here, luv!" I whispered in her ear as I waved to them. When they approached the table and took a seat next to Amelíe, Jamison let out a huge sigh. "Oh geez, that was kinda painful up there." He said as he rested his head on his only arm. "I'm going to go get some food, so do you want anything?" Mako said. "Just some boba tea," Jamison replies as he watched his large boyfriend walk over to the refrigerators and lines.
"What do you mean it was painful?" I ask. He shifted in his seat. "Just seeing Genji like that. I can't imagine what he must've been feeling. Oh, but his dad was what really got Mako and I. That man looked so tired..." He explained. "He's been through a lot," Fareeha started. "So has my mom, and Mr. Reyes, Mr. Lindholm, Reinhardt, they have all been through some serious stuff...but I'll admit, the ones who have felt the greater pain would be Mr. Morrison and Mr. Reyes." Fareeha said, ending her sentence by taking a bite of her trail mix. I turned to Amelíe, confused and wanting to know more. I think she understood. She turned her whole body to me and took a deep breath before she explained. "Before I start, you must promise to keep this between only us." She said as she motioned to me and her and also the others. I nodded and made the 'cross my heart, hope to die' motion over my chest. Amelíe nodded."Okay, I'll start with my dad," Amelíe started. She took a moment to gather her thoughts before explaining to me everything. "The first person my dad fell in love with was a woman named Belinda Johnson, who ended up becoming Jesse's mom. She died in childbirth." I gasped and covered my mouth with both hands. The others just slightly flinch and go back to their food. Amelíe continued. "My dad didn't know what to do. It was his first child after all. So he turned to Ms. Amari and Mr. Morrison for help. They had all been friends in Highschool so they still knew and supported each other really well. When Jesse turned one, dad fell in love with a tourist from France who was visiting the city. They wrote to each other when she was away and spent every moment together when she was in America until she finally bought an apartment and moved to America for good. Dad thought she was the one, but after I was born, she vanished. She stopped calling dad, stopped the letters, stopped everything. The last time dad saw her was about 7 months after I was born and she was with one of the wealthiest guys in town. So basically, my real mother is a gold digger." Amelíe said, stopping for a moment to collect the rest of her thoughts. She started speaking again and I listened intently. "When I was two and Jesse was three, dad won the town lottery and was able to buy a nice home closer to his friends, as he had previously been living in a rough area of town. When a house across from his best friend's place went up for sale, he grabbed it immediately. When he settled us in he realized that he loved to take care of us and children in general. So not only did he take a teaching position at Overwatch High, but he also adopted an infant from Portugal,"
"Lucio?" I ask with a slight smile, cutting her off from her story. She too gave me a slight smile before continuing. "Yes, Lucio. Dad now had three of us along with his greatest friends close by. He didn't think he'd fall in love again but he told me he did one last time, with a woman named Julia Sanchez. He loved her so much and they eventually had their last child, Olivia. But one day, like my mom, Julia disappeared...but didn't completely abandon my dad. She sent a letter to him, saying she moved to a different state because she wasn't ready for the responsibility of being a mother quite yet. But she still loved Dad, so she kept paying her child support and even still she sends presents to Olivia for her birthday and Christmas. But dad still felt heartbroken. So he stopped meeting other women and started focusing more on his job and family." Amelíe explained. Wow...They really have been through a lot. "Wait...what about Mr. Morrison?" I ask. Amelíe took a sip of her tea before answering me. "You'd have to talk to Angela about that." She replied. Fares stepped in. "But not anytime soon. Angela is still hurting over the whole Genji situation and telling the story of her father would hurt her even more." She said. I nodded.
"I understand."
