It's Friday and usually I would take the kids out to dinner after school, but most of them have after school clubs to attend to. I left the school not long after most of the students did. Miss Oledele was still standing outside the front doors and I told her to have a good rest of her day as I walked to the teacher's parking lot. When I got in my car and turned on the ignition, I started thinking. 'The kids won't be home for another couple of hours,' I thought to myself. 'I could order a pizza for all of us when they got home.' Well, there's the plan for dinner. But what about right now? I don't feel like just going home. 'I suppose I better visit Jack and see how he and Genji are holding up.' I thought. 'Yeah, I'll do that.'

I drove out of the parking lot and onto the main road. It took me about 10 minutes to get to the hospital. I parked the car and walked inside and went up to the floor where Genji is staying. The minute I walked into the waiting room, I spotted Hana and Olivia sitting next to each other. I walked up to them. "Hello, girls," I greeted. "What are you doing here, Olivia? I thought you had swim practice?"
"Coach was sick today. No practice." She said blankly as she stared down in her lap. She was writing something. She's probably just doing homework. I glanced over at Hana. "Is your father in there with Genji?" I asked. She nodded. "You can go in there." I smiled and patted both of their heads. "Alright girls, behave." I said as I walked towards Genji's room. I opened the door and peaked my head inside. Genji was in his bed; he looked like he was asleep. Jack was sitting in a chair in the corner of the room where the window is. He was staring so deeply off into the view of the city. "Hey Morrison," I said, catching his attention without waking Genji. "Mind if I come in?" I asked. He smiled and nodded. I walked into the room, shutting the door softly behind me. As I walked over to Jack, I made sure to get a good look at Genji. Man, that kid looks bad. A cast on an arm and a leg, gauze bandages everywhere, even some stitches around his face. Poor kid.

"He's under a lot of pain medication," Jack said, catching my attention. "Makes him sleepy. He'll be out probably for the rest of the day." He said. There was almost a hint of sadness in his voice as he said that. "Oh yeah?" I said as I took a seat in the chair next to him. "But how are you holding up, Jack?" He chuckled as he ruffled his blonde hair. "I've seen better days Gabe," He glanced over at Genji. "I've seen better days alright." There was a silence between the two of us for a moment. "I really thought that fall would've killed him." He stated out of nowhere. I turned to face him. "I thought it would've killed him and I wasn't ready to lose this kid." His voice cracked. He took a deep breath and covered his mouth with his hand, possibly to stop him from crying aloud. I put my hand on his shoulder. "Hey man, it's okay," I said. "He's getting better now, isn't he?" Jack gave me a small smile. "Yeah, he's recovering quite nicely." I removed my hand and sunk deeper into the chair, not taking my attention away from Jack. "They're moving him into the recovery ward tomorrow. He'll be staying there for about a week or so...then he'll be coming back home to us." Jack said, smiling as he finished his sentence. I chuckled. "Well there you go! He'll be back home where he belongs in no time," I said, glancing over at Genji again. "Where's the recovery ward at?" I asked. Jack thought for a moment. "One floor down. It's not far from the physical therapy section of the hospital." Jack said.

Suddenly, his phone started beeping. He dug it out of his pant's pocket and stared at the screen. "I gotta take this. It's Ana." He said before getting up. I nodded. He walked out into the hallway and I started to hear a piece of the conversation before the door to the room shut behind him. I sighed. The room was now eerily quiet, except for the constant beeping of Genji's machines that were hooked up to him. I stared out of the window, at the city below. The sun was slowly setting, and I knew I should probably leave to go home to my kids soon. I stood up and stretched. Just then, Jack walked back into the room. "What did Ana have to say?" I asked. He chuckled and rubbed his neck. "Oh nothing much. She just wanted to know if it was okay if she ran over to my house and borrowed my recipe book," He explained as he walked over to me. "You heading out?" He asked. I nodded. "Yeah, I better get Olivia home and get something for dinner started," I explained. "You're welcome to join us if you want." I offered. "Ah, thanks for offer Gabe. But I think I'll stick around here a little longer, at least until his nurse comes back in." He said. We quickly pulled each other into a hug and I patted his back. "You take care, Jack." I said.

"I'll try, Gabe."

I walked out of the room and back into the waiting room. Hana and Olivia were still there and Olivia was practically buried in wadded up papers. The small trash bin next to her was overflowing. "Come on Olivia, let's go home." I said I placed my hand on her head. She chuckled. "Ugh, okay, just stop messing up my hair." She said as she gathered her things together. "Bye Mr. Reyes, bye Olivia." Hana said as the two of us started walking towards the elevator. "Have a good night Hana. Take care of your father." I said. She nodded and Olivia and I were walking inside the now open elevator.

The trip back home was nothing much to talk about. Olivia was still writing things down in her notebook then tearing it out. I asked, "What are you doing, punk?" She replied, "Nothing." I chuckled. "That doesn't look like nothing." I said. She then stuffed the notebook in her backpack before getting out her phone. Our conversation was now officially over.

It was almost dark outside when we arrived home, and I saw that Jesse and Amelíe's cars were in the driveway. I hope they hadn't eaten yet. Olivia and I exited my car and walked inside the house. Amelíe was sitting on the floor in the living room and reading a book, while I could hear Jesse and Lucio in the backyard playing soccer. Amelíe stood up when she heard us come in. "You're finally home." She stated blankly. I shut the front door and locked it for the night. "We were at the hospital," I said. "Amelíe, go get your brothers, then meet me and Olivia back here." I ordered. She nodded and made her way to the backyard door with good hustle. Olivia flopped onto one of the couches. "What's for dinner, Dad?" I heard her say into a pillow, her voice muffled slightly. I chuckled. "Wait 'till everyone else gets here." It didn't take long for Amelíe and the boys to get back, and when they did, they sat down either on the couch next to me or the floor. I sighed. "How do you guys feel about pizza for dinner tonight?" I say. The room suddenly exploded with excitement. I chuckled then made my way to the phone that hung on the wall outside of the kitchen archway.

That night, I ordered two large pizzas for me and my kids and by the time we were done, there was hardly anything for us to have for leftovers tomorrow. The kids ate so much, that they went to bed straight after dinner too. I say it was an easy win. As I too, started getting ready for bed that night, I couldn't help but look out my window. I could barely see the hospital, as the outline of dark trees blocked my view. But I stared anyway. Hoping that Jack's mental state was getting better. "Hang in there, Morrison," I said to myself.

"Hang in there."
