Author's Note: Hello, for a final time on this work. I abandoned it for too long and let my life get in the way. I never forgot about this. I reread it a lot actually. I finally got the courage to write this final chapter. Thank you so much to everyone who went on this journey, especially if you waited through my year or so of absence. Y'all are absolutely the best. Thanks for everything.
You awoke in a cold sweat with a scream echoing from a dream that was now gone. Ruby was rolled over on the far side of his bed, curled up and still in a deep slumber. The hair on the nape of your neck refused to go down. Something was wrong. Beyond wrong. Your heart trembled as you placed one foot on the floor, and then the other.
You left Ruby's room and scanned the interior of the house. The walls breathed from your blurry night vision, making the scene feverish while still deathly silent. As you were about to return to the bedroom, a slip of movement outside caught your attention. Between the window blinds you could see a dull silhouette pacing. Without a second thought, you strode to the front door and swung it open boldly. The figure in the darkness stopped pacing on queue. You stared him down.
"Scott- what-"
"I can't take it here no more... and y'all can't take me. I need to just beat it outta town for as long as I want. This ain't NORMAL. Look at my FACE. You see this? All bruised up? Fuck this."
"You can't-"
"Can't what?", he cut you off immediately, "You ain't us. We may have let you in our home and shit, but that doesn't mean you get to decide what we do. I'm taking a little fucking break."
Your ribcage felt as though it had been filled with cement. It pulled you downwards, out of the fog of torment that had been plaguing the house for so long.
"Would you come back faster if I wasn't here anymore to mess shit up?", you asked coldly.
Scott's body twitched.
"Don't say somethin' like that."
"Why not?"
"That's cruel baby... You ain't got nowhere to go... I've been in your situation- homeless and confused. I'd be so scared of being alone again.", his tone was strained and kept croaking as though a lump in his throat was growing.
You cleared your voice and pressed on, "You guys are going places that most people never get to see even a speck of. You came from fucking nowhere, and you're both about to be everywhere- I just know it. I don't want to be someone who stops that."
Scott turned his head upwards to look at you with dreary eyes, "Y/N... we can't just send you back into the world. Shit, Ruby would rather bash in his skull at this point than make someone like you that miserable."
A car pulled up and turned into the driveway, headlights igniting the withered image of Scott.
"Imma just be gone for a bit. I need to be alone."
You walked towards him, arms open. He sighed and put his duffle bag down, letting you come in for a hug.
You held onto him firmly, face wedged into his neck. Your ribs suddenly squeezed your lungs, making you shudder.
"Don't cry Y/N, it's all good. You heard me say I'll only be gone for a bit."
You looked up at Scott while the first tears started to rush, "It's not that. It's that I've decided I won't be here when you come back."
His gaze widened, "What- didn't you listen to me just now?"
You planted a kiss on his cheek, as delicate as a ghost, "I love you, and I'm asking you to let me go."
