The weekend came along and I had one thing in mind and that's to visit darkness.
Darkness can be anything. Often it is an area of light not passing through, but it can be anything even a life. As for me, I'm visiting darkness, my old friend.
General Maxilom Avenue, or more popularly known as Mango Avenue, was named in honor of a hero of the Philippine Revolution. It is not only one of the main thoroughfares of Cebu City but it is also gaining popularity as one of the city's major entertainment spots. One of which is Rux Bar and Casino that can be found in the site. I never hesitate going in the bar even as an 18 year old because I'm always welcome. The glass walls mirrored people who seemed glitched by the disco ball above them. They fill their empty feelings with parties and crazy shenanigans to escape problems. I used to come here to do the same, but things changed when I met him, Darkness.
"It's been a year Elly. What brings you here?" the familiar low pitched tone greeted me. "I'm here to give your share of the book. You are somewhat a co-writer and I can't thank you enough for that." I replied.
"My name is Darkness after all. I might as well remain in the darkness." He grinned. "We all know that's what not you want. I know I didn't write your name on that book, but that's what you wanted kept secret." I replied. "I'm touched by your selfless image here. I thought you'd walk away with the money all to yourself. I know that book is getting bigger and bigger somehow in the charts. It means a lot to be part of the share even if I never asked." He replied.
"Look, I know you. You always have idles and that's why you stopped me from being a bartender here in the bar to escape the life of the party that might turn seriously dangerous in the future with all the drugs and-"
"And bad things." He interrupted. "You don't need to highlight that life since your different now. I'm proud of the writer you've become because of some advices I gave, but 99% of that book is your idea while 1% is just some random advices I said."
I handed him an envelope. "Thanks and I know this is not enough, but when things get bigger I might as well stop by to give you." I whined and insisted on him taking the check. " 5,000 pesos for your school life. Please take it back. You know I can't accept it." He replied and gave a serious look. "I know you care and look out for me, but it's what you deserve as well." I insisted once again.
"Fine, it's mine but I'll use it for us to go out in the new casino in Dairy Land, the one near CI park. I heard they serve great vanilla ice-cream." He chuckled and gave me an embrace. "You know I can't spend this money alone without you because you're the closest thing to me having a sister." He insisted. "Well, if that's what you want." I grinned. "It's a date. I'll book it on August when your birthday is close for a pre-celebration." He grinned. "Then we'll throw the eggs on your face with the gang. Don't worry, the gang is sort of innocent now since we don't torture our enemies anymore."
"Nice but still into those shenanigans and this whole gang thing will not solve anything." I reasoned. "This is Mango Avenue, home for the gangsters and no one can change that." He replied
"Right. I guess I'll be heading home now since it's almost your gang time." I replied. "Wow, you still remember the old routines." He grinned and patted me on the head. "Don't do that 'cause it makes me feel small. Just don't get yourself killed." I cackled. "Never in my lifetime will I ever get killed by my mortal enemies for it only happens in the movies." He replied with a sarcastic tone.
A large man came into the bar while everyone else looked at him, flustered. "Leave now." Darkness insisted. I then passed by the bar and proceeded to the exit while not wanting to glance at the gangs starting their gangster routines. I then arrived at the parking lot to take my phone out.
