"Hey. Did you get enough sleep?
It was Jack, staring down at me.
"What?" I asked in a very hoarse voice, sitting up.
"You were asleep for 5 days, so you must be pretty energized."
"What the heck are you talking about?
Jack was a little surprised, but he still told me what happened.
"Newt called down to us saying you were having nightmare and wouldn't wake up. When you did you got hostile and swung at us, saying to 'get away from me, murders' and 'were all going to die at the hands of people who wanted to save us.' I wrote them all down in here."
He held up a notebook bound in leather. I took it and turned to the bookmarked page.
Get away from me, Newt. I don't care who you were to me, get away.
Gally, where is he. Check. He's dying!!!!
We're all going to die, really.
The ones who wanted to save us will do it.
That sound! What is that sound! Stop it Newt! What's making that noise?
Oh. My. Gosh. What happened to me that I would say that?
"Don't blame yourself. It wasn't really you."
"Uh, yes it was. I said those things."
I shook it off, it tried to, and asked something else.
"How's Newt? I told him to get away from me, right?
Jack shrugged and looked at his scared hands.
"He just left to see if everyone else was ok."
"And? What did he look like?
"Umm... He was ok."
I looked at him widening my eyes, and he cracked.
"He looked like you'd punched 'im in the stomach."
I got up from the makeshift bed, and was surprisingly balanced. Jack let me go after he saw I was fine. I stomped down the stairs, and walked out into the sun. It was warm out, and my eyes barely stung.
I half walked half ran to the fields and saw Newt standing in the corner.
"Hey, Newt! What's up?"
He jumped, and saw me with his big brown eyes. He walked to me with his limp, and gave me a big hug. He smelled like flour and bread.
"Are you ok? Do you know what happened?" I asked him.
He pulled away, and he was about 4 inches taller than me.
"No. And are you ok? Do you remember anything?"
I stepped back, and shook my head.
"No. Did anything happen while I was asleep?"
"Ya. And no. Ummm... somethen' happened with Gally."
What? does anyone get a rest here?
"What happened?"
Newt looked down at the ground.
"Let's go sit over there for a bit. I'm bloody tired."
We went and sat by a little bench made out of planks.
"He went through almost exactly what you did."
The words made me squint, and my brain didn't let it make sense.
"Huhhhh???
"Ya. Couple of people said he was havin' a nightmare, just like you. When I went down to check on him, he went nuts."
I just remained silent, trying to process what was happening. Newt looked a little hurt, but he went on.
"He said your name's Grace."
Grace. My name, given to me by the parents I didn't remember.
"Are you ok with me telling you all of this?"
Newt looked so sad, with his hand on my shoulder. It was obvious that he cared.
"Yes."
I swallowed, and he continued.
"You said he was dying. And to check on him. When we did, he was freaking out. I don't know what the klunk is happening, but it's big and scary and could change everything."
I agreed. I asked to see how Gally was doing.
"He's not awake yet, and I don't think its a good idea."
I was fine with that. I just wanted to know one more thing.
"What did he say?"
Newt's big brown eyes had something come over them, and he told me in a whisper.
"That he loved you."
Whhhhaaattttt????????
"I- I- I've never.... e-what?"
Newt nodded, and said, "I'm sorry. This must all be so sudden. All this bloody klunk's happenin and none of us know what to do."
"My brains just like, adffffffferrrrrr..... whaaa?" I did a little swingy thing with my arms, and put my voice in different pitches.
He laughed, and we did the little dance together.
I laughed to, and it felt so good I can't even explain it.
"You're weird." Newt said after a little bit.
"And your so normal?" was what my reply was.
He laughed again, and it WAS weird. Like a little baby walrus hyperventilating. Was kind of cute, actually.
Everything in the glade went quiet. It was only me and him, staring at each other. It was like he was memorizing my face, and I was memorizing his. He had the best eyes ever, the cutest dimples when he smiled. Don't even ask about his angular lips and cheekbones.
I swear it was another day before I said something.
"So.................. Alby said I had to get a job. Which ones are there?"
He smiled again, stood up, stuck his hand out and said, "Come on. I'll show you."
