On the fifth day, it happened. Pretty much the apocalypse.
I was just finishing my bread and cheese, when a blinding light flashed throughout the cell.
"Hey!" I heard Newt yell.
Gally cursed.
"What the hell?" I screamed.
It must have effected the other gladers too, I heard muffled shouts from outside the cell.
Chucks worried face appeared in between the bars, and he started to unlatch the door.
"Alby sent me to get you shanks." He said, trying to smile. When we climbed out, Chuck caught me eyes.
They had found the exit. The hole was finally dug, there would be no more dead ends, no more waiting. I would have preferred to wait much longer.
The whole glade was running around, grabbing supplies, water, weapons. I ran to the house to get a change of clothes.
When I had a pack of extra shirts slung over my back, I ran to catch up.
Gally was still standing by the slammer. He looked a little pale and misshapen.
I ran fast to him, and he stumbled backward with my weight. I was immediately reminded of the day we met. I buried my face in his shirt.
"Grace, I was so misunderstood here. When I needed you, you came. Thanks." He had tears in his eyes.
I sniffed too. "Yeah." I looked down at my feet, ashamed. Did I really have nothing more to say?
"Is there any other option?" I asked him. He didn't answer because I already knew it.
"Yeah. Okay. Okay. Um, okay." I ranted. He lightly placed a kiss on my forehead. I turned, and ran to the hole.
The gladers were blocking the entrance, so I had to yell and push so I could get up to the front. Minho was making a speech.
"We don't know what will be out here," he started,"but we know it's dangerous. Be careful, and don't die. Alright!" he clapped. "Come on!"
They cheered.
Newt stood by my side and held my hand in a death grip.
"Aren't you just so bloody inspired?" He whispered to me. I nodded, but wasn't in the mood to reply. We'd left Gally. To die. Alone.
I shook my head as we advanced down the tunnel. It was dark, smelly, and wet. Our boots made a hollower sound the farther we got. The floor and walls were turning into metal.
There were the screeches of metal, grinding of mechanisms as they churned. Lights flicked off and on in the distance.
All of a sudden, there was a terrible ripping noise. It made me jump about ten feet in the air.
A scream bounced off the walls, creating a head pounding effect.
The screech made us jump, and we drew our weapons.
There was silence.
"Everybody alright?" Alby called.
We grunted in return, and I didn't know if the scream came from one of us or something else.
We took exactly five steps, before two more screams filled the air. It was defiantly some of us.
"Run!" I heard Minho yell. We did, and it was surprisingly orderly. Occasionally people tripped, but otherwise they were fine. The screams died in my ear, my breath was the only thing I could hear.
