I hurried out of the homestead and went straight to Jack.
"Gallys awake. He's fine, but I think he just wants to talk to me right now, k?"
"Really? How was his color? Did he have a fever? Were his veins green?"
I shook my head at all of the questions, and ignored him as I jogged to the well.
When I got back into the homestead,I found rob and Jack standing a couple of feet away from Gally, mostly because he was loosely holding a sharpened stick.
"Grace, tell these shuck idiots to get out. I need to talk to YOU."
Rob touched my shoulder, and indicated with his head that they would be right outside. I nodded and turned back to Gally. He had put down the stick, and was sitting again. I walked over and felt his head. It was warm, but the heat outside probably made it that way.
"So tell me."
He folded his arms, and leaned back.
"Let me see your stomach. On the side."
I widened my eyes, and my mouth hung open. That was NOT something you say to me. I slapped his arm, and stood. I was about to storm out of the room when Gally caught my arm.
"No, not like that. Please?"
I reluctantly pulled the hem of my shirt up, and Gally examined it. It was weird for him to touch something, even if it was just the place I held food.
The Keeper pointed to the left back side of my stomach, and his fingers were hot.
"There..." His voice shook, "There are three puncture marks in your back."
That meant nothing to me at the time. I could have gotten it from a piece of wood or Newts nails.
"Look me in the eye, Grace. Do you think I'm crazy?"
I did look up, and his slate grey eyes warmed. They didn't look crazed, and his lashes were long.
"No."
Gally smiled.
"Now check me."
He surprisingly yanked his whole shirt off, showing off a fine slab of ribs.
I whistled. WHISTLED.
I didn't realize it until it was too late.
He smiled at me, and it gave me flutters in my stomach, around where he touched me.
I quickly ducked behind him before he could see the look on my face. Right in the middle of his side, there were four pricks, the skin around them dark red.
He put the shirt back on, and hopefully my cheeks had calmed down.
"Did you dream of bugs?" I asked.
He nodded. The light was changing in the room, and I thought about the gathering Alby said he'd hold.
"They were in my eyes. And ears. And in every shucking crease in the floor."
I knew he was somewhat the toughest I'm the glade, not letting anything get to him, but after all that time of holding it inside...
I reached over and hugged him. Gally was a little surprised, his arms sticking out, but after a bit they closed around me. It was a mutual hug; I wasn't supporting him fully and he wasn't supporting me either. It was nice for a while. Only a couple inches taller, I didn't have to strain to see his eyes.
I staggered back, horrified.
They were white, with no pupils.
