27. Drunk

Serenity

"Five." Tawag ko pagkalabas namin ng elevator. Humarap siya at tinitigan ako. Kaya mong tiisin ang mga titig niya,  Serene. You must be wrong about yourself. You aren't that weak. You can't be that weak. Five stops walking as he waits for me to finish my statement. "I really want to help."

"It's not going to take just a week, Serene."

"Well, habang nandito pa ako. Let's not waste our time." He doesn't say anything so I roll my eyes. "Just feed me, I'll surely help you without being annoying. I promise." Sabi ko at tumawa. Napangiti naman siya...at dahilan 'yon upang makaramdam ako ng lungkot. Eh kasi naman eh, ang sarap makitang nakangiti siya. Malungkot... kasi hindi kailanman magiging ako ang dahilan ng magandang ngiti na 'yon.

"Where do you want to eat?" Nakangiting tanong niya.

Stop appreciating his smile, Siri. Just focus on helping him.

"Well attorney, I am a tourist here so take the honor." I say, faking the realest smile I can muster at the moment.

Buong araw akong hindi kumain kahapon kaya siguro ganito nalang kadami ang kinain ko. Tinawanan nga ako ni Five eh habang pinapanood niya akong kumain.

"Slow down. Wala kang kaagaw, Serene."

"I am hungry." I tell him the obvious. He just snickers quite cutely. This guy, it's so hard not compliment him. "Why don't you tell me the basics about this thing we are about to do?"

"Um," He pauses to look around the extravagant-looking restaurant. He also sits properly, leaning his head forward closely. "Have you...um, have you seen this local movie where—"

"Oh. Yes, yes. That." Haha. Nahihiya siya kasi alam niya ang tungkol sa pelikula. Geez, there's nothing to be ashamed about it. Nakakaproud kaya ang KathNiel. "Ano nga 'yong movie na 'yon?" Naningkit agad ang mata ng maliit ang pasensiyang si Five. Napatawa ako sa reaksiyon niya. Ang mabilis niya talagang mapikon. "Joke lang. Can't help falling in Love, 'yon 'yon."

Tumango siya upang sumang-ayon saka muling sumandal sa upuan. Buwiset talaga. Bakit ba niya kailangang tumitig sa'kin? Nakakabwesit.

"So? Um... What about it? So, totoo lahat 'yong grounds of annulment na nabanggit do'n?" He nods his head again to respond. "Bakit ka naging attorney eh ang labo mong kausap?"Tumawa na naman siya ulit. He looks up to me with amusement and then, he shakes his head. What does that mean? Haha! He finds me funny. This jerk.

"I will file a petition to declare that our marriage is void." He explains. It's funny. This is the very first time for me to feel that I am talking to him as an attorney. He sounds so all-knowing and brilliant and admirably just...perfect. "But of course, it is up to the court to decide if the grounds of my petition are valid."

"Why don't we just tell the court that we never really got married?" Five ogles at me, making me overly conscious and uncomfortable. "What? We never really got married, didn't we?" I just spurt out to shake off my discomfort.

"As I remember, yes."

"Why?"

Tumawa ako dahil sa reaction niya. Sumeryoso kasi ang mukha niya. Nagbibiro lang naman ako.

It was half-meant, Serenity.

"I was just joking. Don't be too serious." Sabi ko pa. "So, 'yon nga? Why can't we just tell the court that we never really got married? We never exchanged I-do's and all the shits you'll be doing soon with her." Dire-diretsong lumabas 'yon sa bibig ko. Hindi ko sinasadya. Ilang segundo saka nakasagot si Five.
