Chapter 30: Recompense

Eric and I walked the rest of the way to the house. He hadn't gotten rid of the bone until we had gotten to the door. What the Dewott said echoed in my mind. Was it really true that-

You're seriously considering what that guy told you? Jet asked. In case you've forgotten, he's the enemy.

And in case you've forgotten, I said, he did nothing to stop us back in Ray.

Cassius? I looked at Eric, who had a puzzled look on his face. What just happened? I looked at him confused.

"What are you talking about?"

Your aura just changed drastically. Eric said. Not only that, but I heard another voice.

Great, dog-face can hear me. Jet said sarcastically. F██████ wonderful. I groaned in agitation at Jet's comment, then looked at Eric.

"Look, I don't really know how to explain it that well, but-" I heard Jet sigh agitated.

Let me take care of this. Jet said. Alright furball, listen here, cause I'm only going to say this once. As plainly and rudely as he could put it, Jet explained everything he had told me, add to that he kept swearing even more along the way. I had a grim feeling he was going to get me in more trouble than I wanted. Eric was looking at me, mixed with a lot of emotions.

I'm guessing you're also the reason why Cassius changed eye colors? Eric asked.

"Wait what?"

Yes, that's because our two eye colors are different. While Cassius' may be blue, mine are red with the blood of anyone who's dumb enough to stand in my way.

"Geez, could you tone down on the violence? Seriously, what are you? Some kind of war veteran?" I heard Jet huff. Eric looked at me, giving a sigh.

I'm not gonna lie, this is going to take some getting used to. I sighed as I lowered my head.

"You're telling me." I started talking again, talking more to Jet. "Look, just try to pretend to be nice."

For the love of f███, I know! I entered the door with a sigh. Eric followed in behind me, then shut the door softly behind me. As I was taking my coat off, I heard footsteps in the distance. When I pushed my coat away from my face, I saw Veronica standing at the entrance to the hallway. The two of us stared at each other for a second as I set down my coat, then she came at me in a full sprint.

"Cassius! Cassius I'm so sorry!" She leapt at me, practically tackling me to the ground as I fell backwards. The only thing keeping me from falling onto my back was the door. I let out a huff of air as I collided with the door. Veronica was gripping onto me tightly, burying her head in my shoulder.

"You were right! I was taking advantage. I'm sorry I lied! I just didn't know if you... if you..." Despite the shock, I reached behind her and started scratching behind her head.

Don't you dare....

"Look, Veronica... there's a lot going that I'm barely figuring out. I'm sorry I yelled at you like that, but-"

Oh my ARCEUS!!!! Veronica looked at me alarmed, then looked around. I had to stop what I was talking about before and look at Veronica.

"Look, I need to explain something." I said. I started to stand up. While doing so, I helped Veronica up to her feet. After she was standing up, I let go and sighed, running my hand through my hair.
