"Those are the scariest hickeys I have ever seen," Jungkook said, his eyes roaming Alice's throat.
Quickly, Alice tried to hide her neck with her hands.
It was already time for the first cross-country practise. People were talking in small groups around the racetrack, waiting for the coaches to arrive, sitting in the grass and chatting carelessly, sharing stories about their summer vacations and how they had missed their teammates.
It had taken three days for Alice to convince Megan that she could go back to school without being killed in the university hallways. Megan only agreed if Alice changed all of her classes, and that's what Alice did. It was still early in the semester, so the girl didn't have too many conflicts finding new classes and dropping out from her old cursus. That meant that she hadn't seen Jisoo, Ann, and Jungkook during the last few days.
Even if in the past, she had classes with them, now she was avoiding them like the plague. She had received a ton of panicked texts from Jisoo and Ann, wondering where she was, but she had ignored all of those, choosing avoidance over a direct confrontation where she would have to explain why she was ignoring them.
So far, she didn't have any problem staying away... until now. She knew that she would see Jungkook at the cross-country practise, but she thought that she would be fine by ignoring him. She certainly didn't think he would come directly to talk to her. And especially not about the marks on her neck.
Three days later and the bruises were still very visible. Alice had been wearing turtleneck t-shirts, but clearly, she couldn't put one of those during her running practise.
"What happened? You played with dark magic and it bit you back?" continued Jungkook very loudly, his usual bunny smile on his face.
"Just... shut up," Alice said, trying to get away from him.
"I thought you were at the other end of the Earth by now," he said, following her, "When I saw you were not coming back to class, I was sure you had run away with that little friend of yours... Melanie? May? Myriam?"
Alice didn't answer. She knew he was trying to provoke her, and she wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of reacting to his snarky comments.
"Ignoring me?" he continued with a grin, "You could at least share with me the story of how you got these weird marks on your neck, are those hands? I didn't see you as a kinky person, but I guess I'm not a very good judge."
Alice suddenly stopped, turning around and Jungkook almost bumped into her.
"Yes exactly! I am into very, very kinky stuff and I love more than anything being strangled to death by strangers I pick in the street, can you leave me alone now?" Alice declared, trying to show in her voice how annoyed she was.
Jungkook was going to say something back but he got interrupted by one of the coaches.
"Hey! Isn't it our famous star! Come here Jungkook we need to talk strategy," the man said, putting his arm around Jungkook's shoulder.
The boy had no other choice but to follow the coach, finally leaving Alice alone.
The practise was exactly what Alice had needed. She loved competition and she loved to run with other people; it motivated her a lot more than running alone.
After the coaches' presentation, there was a warm-up, where everyone ran as one big group around the campus. Jungkook, being the captain, was running in front of everyone, so Alice made sure to stay in the back.
After that, the group was divided in smaller teams of 4 students and there was a program of different lengths of sprints with periods of slow jogs in between. Alice was assigned with a group of 3 other girls. They didn't talk much and stayed focus on the running, which was more than fine with her.
Jungkook was in the group with the fastest boys. It happened a couple of times during the training when they passed Alice and her teammates on the racetrack. Each time, Jungkook winked at Alice who turned away, rolling her eyes.
Soon, the sun was setting down. The sky was a beautiful gradient of pink, purple and orange. Alice, out of breath, was finally done with the training. She was sitting on the bleachers, taking a sip of water, when Jungkook sat beside her.
"So, you were in a black magic coven... You said you did blood magic? What kind?"
"Want me to break your nose again?" Alice angrily responded.
"You wouldn't dare..."replied Jungkook, but he lost his bunny smile.
"Wanna bet?"
People were now beginning to leave, so Alice grabbed her bag and started to head to the main street to walk back home. Of course, Jungkook followed her.
"You don't have to be so mean you know," Jungkook said, and for once, Alice felt that he was serious.
"Didn't you want to kill me like... two days ago?" the girl asserted, still defensive.
"No, that was Jimin and Taehyung," calmly explained Jungkook, "They have a grudge against black magic, for good reasons, I'm sad to say. We would never have killed you, and also, we were just protecting ourselves too! How would you have reacted if you had discovered a witch you didn't know was in your house and then she suddenly ran off in the night."
"Good speech," said Alice, "but I don't have anything to say to you. Goodnight."
And Alice left Jungkook there, starting to walk faster to get rid of him. To her surprise he didn't follow... and she was a little disappointed.
