More than a week had passed since the dream episode with Taehyung.
Alice had been going to school and coming straight back home every day. She had even decided to skip her cross-country practises, pretending to be sick to avoid Jungkook.
Her decision was made. Megan had been right all this time and being civil with a group of sorcerers she knew nothing about was definitely a bad idea. Yes, Jungkook had probably saved her life. That didn't mean they had to be friends. Furthermore, Alice didn't want to anger Taehyung more than necessary by seeing Jungkook again. The blue-eyed man terrified her, even if she didn't completely admit it to herself.
And of course, on top of all of that, Alice was drowning in lab reports, assignments, projects, and had a ton of studying to do. The mid-term exams were the following week and every minute of her over-caffeinated awake time was used to stuff her brain with information. She had been surviving on ramen and candies for the last few days and couldn't remember the last time she had a good night of sleep.
Alice and Megan studied together most of the time, and that day was no exception. After an evening of flash cards and biochemical pathways on large sheets of paper scotched on the walls, the two girls were now enjoying a well-deserved break.
The two girls were now sitting on the little patch of grass outside of their apartment, trying to repair an old bike Megan had found in a nearby dumpster. The sun was setting over their heads, bathing the atmosphere in purple and orange and the breeze was chilly.
"Can you pass me the toolbox?"
The blond girl had the frame of the bike sitting across her legs. Her messy blond hair was attached with an old scrunchy, her round glasses sitting on the tip of her nose.
"I can't, my hands are full of grease."
Alice had been manipulating the bike chain for the last ten minutes, trying to clean it out. By doing so, she had managed to put grease all over herself, and even had a little bit smudged on her cheek. Megan grinned at the sight and stretched her arm across the grass to reach for the red toolbox she had borrowed from their neighbour.
"Where did I put the handlebar?" the blonde mumbled
"It's right beside you!"
Alice's gaze wandered to the sky, admiring the fluffiness of the clouds glowing coral, salmon, and peach. Was it her, or there was something about Fall making everything sharper and clearer, like a filter over the scenery, changing the colours of the usually dull grey and beige streets to rich hues of ash and taupe? In her eyes, everything was more stunning than usual, and even Megan, with her cute updo and her narrowed blue eyes focused on her work seemed particularly charming.
"Alice?"
The girl turned around, surprised to be called out like that.
She wasn't ready to see Jungkook standing on the sidewalk right in front of her, hands in the pocket of his oversized hoodie and black messy hair swaying in the breeze. His coffee doe eyes were looking at Alice expectedly and the girl's stomach curled when she remembered his expression while he fucked her senseless in her dream. In the Fall gleam, he looked even better than usual, his golden skin radiant, a slight blush blooming on his cheeks, and the swell of his muscles under his hoodie a vivid reminder that he had the body of an athlete.
"How did you find out where we live?" brutally asked Megan, dropping her tools.
She was clearly unpleased to see him, her teal eyes sending him a lethal glare.
"Yoongi told me..." Jungkook began, taken aback by Megan's sharp tone, "I was just – Alice, why didn't you call me back?"
Alice gritted her teeth, internally slapping herself for giving the man her number in the first place. She looked at Megan with a gaze she wanted innocent, and the blonde cocked an eyebrow.
