It was now Friday evening. After a long and arduous biochemistry class, Alice was packing her books in her bag before finally heading home. She didn't talk to anybody on the way out, keeping her head down.
Making friends after a change of schedule had been an impossible task. Everyone already had their group of friends and Alice was too unbothered to really put some effort into her social life.
That's why she found herself walking home alone, dragging her feet at the thought of the amount of work she had to do. Midterm exams were approaching, and she was already exasperated by the hours of studying ahead.
Entering her apartment, the smell of something freshly baked floated to her nostrils, making her mouth water at the sweet scent of chocolate.
"What did you bake?" she asked loudly, looking around for her roommate.
"Cookies," answered Megan from her bedroom, "I also made dinner if you want some, it's still in the oven."
Alice restrained herself from running to the stove. Indeed, there was a lasagna in the oven, all golden and crispy on top, the thick layer of cheese melting over the side of the dish.
"This is why we are friends," she yelled to Megan, who simply rolled her eyes.
After eating a big chunk of the lasagna and two cookies, Alice curled up on the couch with her knees against her chest, body engulfed in a blanket. She was scrolling on her Instagram feed when Megan entered the living room, peering at her worriedly.
"What's going on with you? Are you sick?"
"Food coma," Alice answered, not taking her eyes off her phone.
She hadn't been in a good mood recently, and her encounter with the four men in the back alley near the club was the reason. She was slowly getting over it, but her mental state had taken a hit and lately, curling up on the sofa was her way of coping. She hadn't told Megan about it yet, and she was still unsure if she would ever tell her.
"I'm going out, tonight. I was invited to a friend of a friend's party in a huge house," Megan enthusiastically announced.
Alice narrowed her eyes. She didn't want to be alone tonight. Also, it was maybe time she got over herself and learned how to party again without feeling like she was in some kind of danger. Going out with Megan was a good start.
"Can I come?"
Megan was so surprised she almost dropped the golden hoop earring she was trying to put on.
"This is unexpected, but of course you can come! I don't know many of the people that are going to be there, so at least I will have someone to talk too."
Alice knew that she was the one in need of somebody to talk to at parties, but she didn't say anything.
"Yeah... I'm in need of alcohol," she simply stated.
Putting on a black dress and some makeup didn't take long and the two girls were waiting for a taxi at the door at 9:30.
Indeed, the house was huge. It was one of those gigantic modern houses, made all in concrete and glass with a gate in the front. Megan had to enter a code on an electronic keypad for the gate to slide open and let them in. The lights were on inside the building, and the two girls could see the numerous people that were already there through the gigantic bay windows.
Entering the house felt like walking inside an art gallery. The concrete walls were naked except for very large expensive-looking abstract paintings and there were even sculptures in the middle of the industrial-chic living room.
